Frank Murphy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2011.
Mystic - Frank Holmes Murphy of Mystic, passed away on Oct. 4, 2011, at the age of 93, after a rich and rewarding life.

He was born in Bethany, and grew up and lived his working life in West Hartford, moving to Mystic after retiring from General Electric.

He was a devoted husband to Annette, his wife of 64 years, who passed away in 2007.

Frank was a man of many interests. As a young man he played semi-professional baseball, flew small airplanes, did trick riding and rope tricks in local rodeos, and was the amateur chess champion of Connecticut. For much of his life, he was an accomplished rifle and pistol marksman. Later in life, he became a ham radio operator. He developed an interest in collecting and repairing antique clocks. This talent led to his longtime relationship with Mystic Seaport where he was a fixture in the clock and nautical instruments shop. He tended the clocks at the museum for over 30 years. Soon after moving to Mystic, he and a group of friends founded the Mystic Carvers Club. Frank was well known for his exceptional woodworking skills. He took great joy in making clock cases as well as musical instruments, harps, lyres, hammer dulcimers, and banjos. Until his death, every Tuesday the "Cellar Gang" met in his basement workshop to make and play musical instruments. At the age of 91, he traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., to take lessons on playing the Native American flute. Frank often remarked to others that he was never bored a day in his life.

Frank will be greatly missed by his sons, John (Mary) and Fred (Priscilla); daughter, Ruth (John Hay); two grandchildren, Karen Scoville and James Bayrer (Rebecca); and three great-grandchildren, Lily Scoville, Zachary Bayrer, and Jacob Bayrer.

He was predeceased by his father, Frank Patrick Murphy; mother, Ruth Holmes Murphy; sister, Ruth Murphy; and brother, William Murphy.

A Funeral Mass to celebrate Frank's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic.

The Murphy family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Frank's wide circle of friends and all those who gave their time and attention so selflessly to him, especially in these last eight months since he was diagnosed with cancer.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Mystic Seaport Museum (www.mysticseaport.org) or to St. Patrick Church.

Met Frank about 3 years ago. He was very smart (but humble) about many things. However, he was smartest in his outlook on life and his faith in God and this is the gift he gave me. I will always remember his smile and "dandy" outlook!

I had the pleasure of knowing Frank Murphy since we first met in my office in 1984. I always enjoyed taking care of him, but I think I gained more than he in the many great conversations about the Seaport, clocks, his family and life in general. He was a remarkable man and I shall miss him.

Our dear Frank was a family treasure! While living in West Hartford he worked on my grandmother's clocks at her home in West Hartford. I moved to the Mystic area and upon the death of my mother received a few of her clocks. Having worked at Mystic Seaport myself, I had come to know Frank when he would come to tend to the clock in the VRC. I discussed my clocks with him and as fate would have it he had actually worked on them for my grandmother! She had actual hand written notes inside the clocks as to when he had tended to them last. What a small world and what a wonderful, wonderful man. May he rest in peace reunited with his beloved Annette and may you, his family, be comforted at what a profound impact he had on so many people's life. It was my gift to have known him.

Frank Murphy was one of the most intelligent people with whom I've ever worked, and he had a keen sense of humor to match. The world is a poorer place without him. Faith Damon Davison

Frank was an amazing man and a wonderful friend. I remember many happy hours just talking to him about so many different subjects. I accompanied him on many of his tours about the Seaport winding the antique clocks... Each one had a unique story that Frank was always more than happy to convey. He was a good friend and trusted mentor. I will miss him. Rest in peace my friend...

"Frank was an Elder with great observational skills, compassion and integrity. Frank's message was PEACE. I believe, from our conversations, that Frank met his transition without fear as he is now with his Love. Thank you."..............

Frank touched many people. My father, Dave Olsson spent many hours with him and learned many things. His friendship meant the world to my Dad. He left a valuable impression on my 13 yr old son, Mathew. We were blessed to have him part of our lives. God bless to his family and know he is in a wonderful place.
