Frances Updike Obituary

FRANCES
DONNELLON UPDIKE

PONTE VEDRA BEACH - Frances Donnellon Updike died of natural causes on October 21, 2011. She was in her home at Vicar's Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in New York City, Fran was reared in Westchester County, NY, where her family resided first in Larchmont and later, in New Rochelle. She attended the Ursuline Academy and Barnard College where in 1943 she earned a B. A. from Columbia University. Following graduation Fran was employed by American Airlines. During WWII, she worked in their engineering department on the design of the DC-3 aircraft.
In 1945 she married Archibald R. Updike, Jr. of the United States Navy. "Arch" had just returned from the war in Europe. Shortly after their marriage, Arch and Fran moved to Lake Wales, FL, where Arch joined his family in the citrus business. Their company was called Alcoma and its grove holdings extended throughout the state. Together with her sisters-in-law, Jinny Herndon and Jean Updike, and her mother-in-law, Mildred Updike, Fran provided the base of home support for the extended family effort at Alcoma.
During her fifty years in Lake Wales, Fran participated fully in the life of the community. She was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, serving as President of the Women's Club and Secretary of the Western Deanery for the State. She was a charter member of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women and served as its President. As an accomplished oil painter herself, she was very active in the Lake Wales Arts Council. As a philanthropist she led the effort to preserve the Spanish Mission Style Holy Spirit Church. It was designated a national architectural landmark. The restored church later became a center for the arts. The performance hall is named Updike Hall in honor of Fran.
Fran and Arch were members of the Florida Club where they advocated for the interests of the citrus industry, accompanying the Commissioner of Agriculture on trade missions to China. Fran's other philanthropic interests included start-up funding for the Lake Wales YMCA and L'Arche Harbor House in Jacksonville, FL. In 1984, Fran was named Citizen of the Year for the City of Lake Wales.
During their life together Fran and Arch traveled extensively. They enjoyed the outdoors and hunted in the Rocky Mountains, the Alaskan wilderness and the forests of Scotland. They fished the gulf waters from Boca Grande to Chokoloskee. They made two African safaris to Mozambique and Botswana. Arch built a camp in the Everglades and together they traversed the Big Cypress in a custom built swamp buggy.
Fran is remembered for her love of faith, family, friends and fun. She was preceded in death by Arch who died in 1983 and her brother John B. Donnellon. She is survived by her sister Mary D. Blohm and her brother Samuel Donnellon. She is also survived by four children: Sam Updike of Lake Wales and his wife Amelia; Larry Updike of Lake Wales and his wife Monica; Virginia Daily of Houston, Texas and her husband Jayar; and Mary Updike of Atlantic Beach, Florida. She has seventeen grandchildren, to whom she was their beloved "Gigi". She has twenty-four great-grandchildren. Six days before her death her entire family gathered for her 90th birthday. She participated fully in the celebration. Her family is gratified to know she went to heaven with her heart filled with their love.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday October 25, 2011, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Lake Wales, Florida.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Thursday October 27, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Gigi was a very special friend to many people, I being one of them. Her love for me and my art will remain a gift that keeps giving for a lifetime. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to see her this past summer. I missed being able to say a formal farewell to her at the funeral and seeing the Updike family in person. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are to all the family. May you find comfort by remembering the good Gigi accomplished--God bless!

I will never forget all the love and caring that Fran gave to all who entered her life. What a priviledge to know Fran for 35 years! Though a distant family member, Fran's love and open arms always welcomed me to the fold! Fran will be missed, but always fondly remembered. Love to all the Updikes, Donellons and the Daily's.

Dear Sam, Larry, Ginger, Mary and Families, I was so sad to hear about Fran, but Heather told me what a beautiful service it was and I wish I'd been there to see you all. Fran was always so cheerful, fun, and so loving to everyone. What wonderful memories you all have! I smile every time I think of her. If everyone had just a touch of her faith and love, the world would be a much better place. I feel so blessed to have known her.
Love to you all,

Dear Ginger, Mary, Larry and Sam: I don't have to tell any of you that she remains in all of us. As much as I carry her around with me, I can't imagine what it must have been like to call her mom.

I owe my career to her and your late great dad of course, but that's just the tip of it. She was the rock for my dad as well, rescued him from trouble, figuratively held his hand time and time again in a way nobody else in this world could I think. We are the sum of our experience. So if there is any comfort at this time, I hope it's in the knowledge that she continues to add to the ledgers of this generation and those that come after.

God bless you all.

Dear Updike Family -

I met Frances at a baby shower recently and she and her sister Mary were the "life" of the party. Even though I only spent a few hours with her it will be a memory I will cherish for years to come. As we celebrated the anticipation of a new baby, Frances and Mary reminded us to celebrate life itself!

Dear Family of Gigi,

Knowing Gigi has blessed my life immensely. She and her sister Mary started Mothers’ Day Out in the Holy Spirit when my children were toddlers and pre-pre-schoolers—late 70s-early 80s. This allowed us young mothers to have a free morning—what a relief it was to leave all three kids for few hours and join other young mothers for an outing! The friendship continued in many levels: at the board of The Lake Wales Arts Council; saving the Holy Spirit as a beautiful permanent home for the council and it’s mission to serve the community; through her grandchildren and my children going school together in Frostproof; involvement in starting the International Carillon Festival at Bok Tower Gardens 1986, just to mention a few. --- What a nice surprise it was, when just last August I attended my daughter’s baby shower in Jacksonville, to see Gigi and Mary there! She and Mary were so joyous and happy for Michela, their good humor filled the room contagiously.

Gigi’s unyielding faith, love and compassion spread happiness touching countless lives.

Gigi, you have made the world a more beautiful and better because you have lived in it.

Memory Eternal!

We only had the privilege of meeting Grandma Gigi a few times, but her
beautiful smiling face, and kind words
to all our family, and especially her
enthusiasm for life, faith, and family,
were a gift she instilled in her own
children and grandchildren, and thru
them to us. May God bless her soul, and her wonderful family.
