LAKE WALES - Fred Bates, 88, of Lake Wales passed away Monday, August 18, 2008 at the Dove Health Care due to heart failure.
Born January 14, 1920 in West Lebanon, NY; he came to the Lake Wales area from West Palm Beach in 1990. He was the retired owner/operator of Hoag's Corners Lumber in Hoag's Corners, NY for 35 years and a former assessor of the Town of Nassau and then town supervisor from 1971 thru 1975. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Fred was also the first captain and volunteer driver for the Hoag's Corners Volunteer Ambulance Association and a longtime member of Hoag's Corners Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post in Averill Park, New York, the former president of St. George's Association and also a former president of Trinity Temple of Holy Spirit in Albany, New York. Mr. Bates was also a former member of the Hudson Valley Antique and Small Engine Club. He was also a security guard for River Ranch Resort for 10 years.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Bates in 2004 and sister, Virginia Bates Lemire in 2002. Survivors include his daughter, Pat Bates of Lake Wales, FL; sister, Alta Corliss of Tucson, AZ; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 9 00 AM until service time at 10 00 AM, Monday, August 25, 2008 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales with Pat Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cornerstone Hospice Building Fund , 2590 Havendale Blvd NW, Winter Haven, Florida 33881.
