Mrs. McCain was the wife of Dr. Richard McCain, the mother of three, Sara Ann, Richard and Matthew. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Walker. She was born in Anderson and raised in Columbia where she lived fully through her family, church and the community, and through many friendships forged over the years.
She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where she devoted countless hours to teaching, study and worship. She died after leaving Sunday night service at the church.
Her children attended Ben Lippen School and as a result, Mrs. McCain was a committed, driving presence at the school. She led or joined in many aspects of school life over the years including drama and sports. Her home was the center of activity revolving around her family, church, children, friends and her faith.
A 1972 graduate of A.C. Flora High School, she attended Converse College, and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1976. For several years, she taught at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, and later worked in the church office at First Presbyterian.
Dr. and Mrs. McCain had known one another since their school years and, in 1989, they married.
With the birth of their children, she began a continuing involvement with their lives and those of many friends and classmates. She was director of the Ben Lippen Middle School Drama Club for which she organized an annual spring play. She spent countless hours scouring the community for props and costumes for the production. Her theatrical personality was perfect for the role.
She served as "Team Mom" for her children's sports activities, and volunteered as class mother for each of her children. She enjoyed working for the Columbia Garden Club where she served as chaplain, and joined in outreach activities for the elderly, and for children.
At First Presbyterian, she was involved for years with the seventh grade Sunday school class. She served as a deacon in the church, and was active in Presbyterian women.
The family would like you to know that Claudia had some unusual God-given gifts including the wonderful gift of "mercy." She valued relationships over everything else and was always willing to pray, counsel and encourage others. She loved her Lord, she loved her husband and children, extended family, the body of Christ, and those beyond. She was a Proverbs 31:10-31 woman, which includes, among other thoughts: "But a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates." Claudia lives today in Heaven. The family wishes to thank all those involved in her recent care. May God bless you richly.
Mrs. McCain and her family donated her organs for transplant to recipients around the country.
In addition to her husband and children, Mrs. McCain is survived by Ellen Walker Pearson of Florence, Robert C. Walker Jr. of Richmond, Va., Wade (Deedi) Walker Coleman of Columbia, Ann McCain of Columbia, Spruce McCain of Denmark, S.C., Kathy McCain Lee of Atlanta, and Pam McCain Pearce of Charleston; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion St., in Columbia. Burial will follow in the churchyard, after which friends may greet the family during a reception held in the Atrium of Jackson Hall. Elders and deacons of First Presbyterian Church are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Ben Lippen School Capital Campaign, 7401 Monticello Road, Columbia, SC 29203, or to First Presbyterian Church World Missionaries Fund, 1324 Marion St, Columbia, SC 29201. ShivesFuneralHome.com 803.754.6290

Mr McCain and family,
I could not imagine the pain you went through with the loss of your wife, that is until now that I am in the ICU unit with my wife hoping that she survives the night! Thanks to you and your families kindness to be organ donors my wife has made it another 12 years with her heart transplant. This is hard for me to even speak about , as I sit here in her room, but I wanted to say thank you for your sacrifice. I am sorry that this is not written in a more proper way but , as you probably know it is even harder now than ever to reach out to you!
Thank you

Family, I know its been a while since the accident. I don't even really know where to begin. My father James Dennis Heffner was the person that recieved Mrs. McCain's liver. Although he has since passed away, I will never be able to express my feelings towards you all as a family for the extra year that we were able to have with my father because of this precious gift. Dr. Walker you and your children and Mrs. Walker especially are my heroes, I guess thats the best way to explain it.

To Rick and family. My parents (Wayne and Margaret Tye), my brother and sister in law (Chris and Jeanette Tye) and I all want you and your family to know how sorry we were to hear the sad news of Claudia. Our family remembers you with smiles from our fun many years ago when Chris was in the Progressions (you were their photographer), and all the fun we had at the lake (remember our boat?). Our hearts feel so sad right now for your family, so please know that each of you are in our hearts and in our prayers!

JAN
Dear Rick, Sara Ann, Richard, Matthew and Ann,
First, my thoughts have been with all of you since Gary B. called me Monday. I have been praying constantly about all things related to you (plural) and Claudia. What a blessed and beautiful lady has entered the presence of Jesus, our Savior! Please, accept these few words of how I remember her.
Claudia was the most gentle and lovely young woman. I have never heard her say a bad thing about anyone. In fact, she was so gracious and genuine that I think she only saw the best in a person. She was an example for me to follow, but what I must learn is the beauty of who she was. Truly, Claudia is one who is a "friend" to us and to Christ. With her He is well-pleased.
Still, it is YOU who have the most heartache and difficulty of going on without. Know that I shall continue to remember all of you. God bless you with a peace beyond understanding and hearts filled with praise.
In the love of Our Lord, Jan

I went to elementary, jr high, and high school with Claudia. I saw her beautiful picture in the newspaper. May the Holy Spirit comfort you, bind up your broken hearts and give you beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that you might be called trees of righteousness the planting of the Lord(Is 61:1-3). Claudia is in your future...and you will spend eternity together. The Bible describes heaven as being FAR better than the earth. These are some thoughts that helped comfort me when my loved one went to heaven.

Dear Dr. McCain and family,
Like some long returning comet, the gravity of Claudia's death has pulled us back into the orbit of her memory. Even as a star's fire extinguishes, its force prevails. We mourn her loss with you.

Dear Dr. McCain,
Years ago you treated my young son for various things that happen to an active child, but on one visit an X-ray showed a mysterious spot on his leg. You immediately saw my fear, and you prayed with us in your office. I was and am so grateful for that prayer, for your sharing your faith and belief. You are the ONLY doctor who has ever prayed with us for a good outcome, which, in fact, we did receive. Now I earnestly send up for you our prayers for the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. Jean B. Cooper

Although I did not know Claudia she was a great comfort to my sister Brenda Hellams, when her own daughter and my beloved neice Paige died unexpectedly. I met Claudia 2 years ago when my 6th grader (daughter Lauren) was in the spring production of the Ben Lippen Middle School drama club. Claudia loved acting and was a superb acting coach. She was so full of energy and such an encourager to those kids. I couldn't believe what a great production Claudia pulled off with her girls.
When we heard of the accident we prayed earnestly for her healing and grieved when she passed. Now we are praying that God will comfort the family at the most difficult time of their lives. She will be sorely missed by the children and parents at Ben Lippen.

Dr. McCain, Though I did not personally know your wife, in a sense I knew her through you because of your Christian persona in the office. Every visit to your office ended in prayer for healing and God's blessings. These have meant much to me.
I now know your wife shared these things in your life through her caring deeds, love for family and friends, and tireless endeavors for others.
She will be greatly missed. I pray your grief will not overwhelm you; our God will lovingly keep you in His arms til the dark of night passes through. With the most heartfelt sympathy, Sandra C. Justus

Rick,
Through my upbringing in Columbia, I came to know you and Claudia, but I did not realize until this week that a fellow parishioner at St Philips Church in Charleston is your sister, Pam.
My husband, Hank, and I add our condolences and prayers to the many that you and your family are receiving. We are so saddened by your loss.

I praise God for Miss Claudia's life and am so thankful for her ministry to me and to so many others!

My life is richer for having known Claudia. She spurred me on to serve Christ by her own selfless generosity. As a missionary I never get a chance to get to know many new friends, but God was gracious and gave me some precious time with Claudia. We are praying for you all through the watches of the night.
Love,

My wife, Lynn, and I met Claudia through a mutual friend, Julie Moore, while attending First Presbyterian. We joined Claudia and Julie in the small prayer meeting before the evening service one Sunday night last year. I was deeply honored when Claudia, even though I hadn't been a member of First Presbyterian since the 1980s, invited me to lead the prayer meeting. It would be hard to communicate how encouraging that was and what a healing moment in the face of many past wounds inside and outside the Body of Christ. Her sweet spirit permeated that meeting. I thought then and later how badly the church and society needs women like Claudia, who exemplify the "gentle and quiet spirit" of I Peter 3:3 & 4 that is so precious in the sight of God and which represents the truest and most unfading adornment that a woman can have. My wife liked to join that prayer gathering as often as she was able to after that initial meeting. We prayed ardently after we heard about the accident, and we wept when we heard of Claudia's passing. Our prayers are with her husband, children, extended family and friends. We will miss seeing her when we visit her church.
Sincerely, Mike and Lynn Swords

I knew Claudia, and her sister Deedi, as kids. I have such fond memories of the family through high school. My heart grieves for the family, but I also know Claudia will continue to touch lives beyond her days on this earth. Heaven is now a little richer today. May God continue to bless those she has left behind.

To Rick and all the McCain family
It was my great privilege to know Claudia as a young student at A.C. Flora High School. Over the years, I have had the pleasure to watch your family grow. I know that Claudia poured out her life to her family and to her school and church activities. In our heartbreak, we realize that she has left us much too early, but she has gone to her just rewards, and we can all take solace in her eternal peace. God bless and keep you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Rick,
I can't tell you how sad all of us are for you and your family. We were so lucky to have known Claudia and spent all those years with your family at Kanuga. She could light up a room with her smile and she loved you and the boys so much. I know she is with the Lord and happy to be there. She will be greatly missed. Love The McEvers
