Ernest Cobine Obituary

ERNEST COBINE OCTOBER 16, 1922-DECEMBER 28, 2013 Ernie was born in Alton, Illinois to Ernest and Nellie (Nana) Cobine. He passed away peacefully in Eureka, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Louada. He is survived by his children, Robert and Carole Koehne, Mike and Nancy Cobine and Stephen and Kim Cobine. Grandchildren: Lisa and Mike Gibbon, Rob and Celena Koehne, Stacy and Sarah Cobine, Brian and Amanda Cobine, Scout Stallworth and Kendall Cobine. Great grandchildren: Gunnar and Connar Gibbon, Sonja and Allexandra Clark, Kimber Stallworth, and one great-great grandson, Orion Wollman. Ernie endured a life of hardship as a young man having grown up during the Great Depression. After graduating from high school, he entered into the service of the United States Marine Corp. A shipboard accident prevented him from seeing combat in the South Pacific and he spent nearly a year recovering in San Diego, Ca. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Illinois and found employment at the Western Cartridge Company where he also found his bride to be, Louada Reed. After experiencing the temperate climate of California, the young couple made their home in Los Angeles and Ernie began his career with the Los Angeles Police Department serving under both Chief W.H. Parker and later Chief D. Gates. Ernie and Louada enjoyed all that the Los Angeles area offered. Summer beach holidays at Refugio Beach were among their favorite memories. They explored the National Parks and made many cross country trips back to Illinois. In the early 1950s they traveled north to see the Oregon coast but didn't make it past the Klamath River. This began another era of favorite vacation spots with the annual fishing trip to the mouth of the Klamath River in Northern California for salmon and entertainment. In 1965, Ernie retired from the LAPD and moved the family to Eureka. Having received his teaching credential while attending night school at UCLA, Los Angeles, majoring in math, he joined the teaching staff of Eureka High School. He was a popular teacher and class advisor to many students. Many students remember him to this day. Ernie always said "he put on six shows a day" and people who know him will remember that. Ernie also participated in many civic clubs in the area. He was elected to the City Council of Eureka in the early 1980s. One of his most personal accomplishments was the restoration of 2nd Street and Old Town (Known as the North of 4th) and the development of the Woodley Island Marina. Ernie and Louada enjoyed retirement. They traveled to Hawaii, Washington DC and Canada in addition to spending summers fishing at the Klamath. They even toured the west coast on their motorcycle in their 70s. Ernie was an excellent woodworker and had the shortened forefinger to prove it! In his final days, he still spoke of the many memories created at their home on 14th and I Streets. Especially all the Eureka High Staff gatherings in the attic. Those were some good times! We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to Dolly Frye and her wonderful staff for the care they provided to Ernie over the past few years AT Frye's Care Home. We also thank Hospice of Humboldt for their assistance during these past few months. Per Ernie's wishes, no services will be held. The family will gather in the spring to combine and spread Ernie and Louada's ashes at their preferred location. If you wish to make a donation in Ernie's honor, please consider Hospice of Humboldt. You lived a long, good life Dad. We will remember you fondly and thank you for the lessons you have given us over the years. May you rest in peace and be in Heaven an hour before the Devil knows you're dead. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.comand click on obits.

I took care of Louada, and then Ernie for a short while when living in eureka and working for Frye's. I still think fondly of them both. Louada was such an intelligent and humorous person. Her snow white hair was envied, as it was absolutely gorgeous. Such a character! Ernie was so kind and equally amusing. Memory like no other! He would tell me lots of stories about his life. I made it a point to come and see him as much as I possibly could while on shift just to listen to him. I always told him he needed to write about his life. I just saw his obituary. I moved out to the east coast in 2013 and decided to look for it today. His memory lives on through his family and the people around him that got to know the wonderful person he was. He and Louada.

Time has flown by since Ernie's passing, but my memories of him will never be far from my mind. He was a wonderful roll model who was always kind to me, mentoring me into adulthood. I had so much respect for him and love. I had the pleasure of going to school with Steve, and when it came to Steve, it was very clear: that apple did not fall from his father's tree. Much respect and love.

Ernie, I think of you so often, especially when I drive by your old, beautiful house. I miss you, but I hope you and Luada are camping, fishing, riding motorcycles, and having a blast. Until we meet again, my friend.

Ernest Cobine was my favorite teacher in high school. I had him for Civics. He taught me more than just civics, he taught me to be brave. One thing I dispized most was to get up in front of the class and make a report. He taught me to have self respect and courage. When I got my report card at the end of the year, I had a "B" in his class. Mr. Cobine you will be greatly missed. Thank you for all you taught me! R.I.P.

January 15, 2014

Where do I start? I was transferred to EHS in March 1970 from Winship Jr. High and met all the staff at that time...I was secretary to the principal, Haven Howatt....Ernie was so pleasant and joked a lot in the office and I asked him if he seemed "at home" there..I told him he must have visited the principal's office many times! Yes, many years were spent in the attic at Ernie's and Louada's home...especially after the football games.....such fun and such great friends they were. And I remember seeing Ernie at Cannam's Mkt. after school one day....he told me of his episode of "out of body" experience when he had surgery on his hand...he said he could look down from above and see himself in the hospital bed....he said it was an experience he'd never forget...Ernie was a neat teacher and everyone enjoyed his humor and smile....many fond memories of the staff at EHS and Ernie was one of my favorites. My sincere condolences to all the family. The Lord is happy to meet you, Ernie and Louada for sure!
Thanks for the Memories! Shirley Fullmer

Mr Cobine was a very well liked teacher and just a great person. I did not actually have him for a teacher, but I do remember one time while cutting class, he spotted me wandering down the hall. He pulled me aside and advised me to either go to class or learn how to hide better. I took his advice, I got better at hiding. Rest in peace. Class of '77

My deepest sympathies to your family. I graduated from EHS in 1966 and was taught PAD by Mr. Cobine. He was my all-time favorite among teachers.I shall always be grateful to him for workeding with me to become comfortable speaking in front of a room full of people. I was painfully shy in those days and he was a gentle and sweet man. His lessons have served me well for many years now.Thank God for a rare jewel among teachers. His sense of humor was fantastic. I've spoken to many people over the years about how great he was. I'll never forget him.

So sorry to read of your father's death, but what a life he had. It's easy to see that Mr. Cobine (I also had your father at EHS, '77) had many talents, interests, and wasn't afraid to take on any 'adventure'.

We trust that reflecting on his life will bring a smile, a shake of the head, and be a comfort for these difficult days. You're in our thoughts.

Sincere sympathies to the family, it is never easy to say goodbye to a parent or grandparent, it is especially difficult when that loved one was as wonderful of a person as Ernie Cobine.

Mr. Cobine was one of my all time favorite teachers at EHS, class of '67 Civics/PAD. His stories about his years with LAPD were both entertaining and filled with life lessons - I have shared some of those stories with my teenage grandchildren - they think he must have been an awesome teacher! He was and I am forever grateful that I was blessed with having been one of his students.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Ernie. I first met him in May of 1959 when he was assigned by the LAPD to do my background investigation to become a Los Angeles policeman. Both of us had Marine Corps values and subsequently became "brothers in blue".
When I visited Ernie in Eureka he was a very happy retired policeman and had taken on another profession as a teacher. We had a great time talking about the old day in Los Angeles. He was proud of his sons in law enforcement. Rest in peace. Semper Fi JIM

Very sorry to hear of the loss of your father. He was a beloved teacher and community leader.

Mr. Cobine was my Civics teacher at EHS " class of 66 " What a fun class. He is the the first teacher that comes to mind when I look back over those fun high school days.

I will never forget the day in his class, when I was scheduled to give
an oral report. He knew I was frightened-pulled me aside and siad "you can write your report and hand it in to me next class". Wow-what a relief.

Through the many yeas after high school when I would see him around town, how nice it was to have him take the time to stop, say hi, and remember my name! I beleive he would say...well, hello there Miss. Nickalou
