Dr. John Houghton

HOUGHTON, Dr. John Edward, completed his earthly journey at age 83 on January 12, 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Surviving is his devoted wife of 58 years, Edith C. Houghton; his children, Kim Pontillo (Nelson), Mark Houghton (Theresie), Paul Houghton (Dianne) and Dr. Micah Houghton (Laura); two grandchildren, Tim and Charlotte Houghton; three stepgrandchildren, JoAnne Weaver, Lynn and Mary Pontillo; and a sister, Joyce Carmines. Dr. Houghton received a Bachelor's degree and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Richmond and Masters and Doctorate degrees from the Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Houghton served as a pastor to churches in Culpeper, Fauquier, Dinwiddie and Lancaster counties. He retired from fulltime ministry in 1994, after serving Kilmarnock Baptist Church for 35 years. Following retirement he served as an interim pastor for numerous churches across the Northern Neck. Dr. Houghton was Vice President of the Virginia Baptist General Association, serving on numerous committees and as a representative to the General Board. Dr. Houghton served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Richmond and gave the Baccalaureate sermon in 1989. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, at Kilmarnock Baptist Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.
