I knew Graham for 20 years, having met him in '89 as a real estate agent. I sold him his Greasy Creek farm here in Wythe County. We became good friends and spent many hours taking in the sights of the mountains here in southwest Virginia, enjoying Fiddlers Conventions and various other festivals in the area. We sped along the backroads in his "Ridge Runner", Mazda RX7. Time spent with Graham was always interesting. The simple act of going out for breakfast or dinner could turn into an all day adventure. The best times were just sitting on the porch at Greasy Creek and rocking away the hours with good conversation. I have no doubt his spirit still fills the hollows of Greasy Creek and always will. I feel as if I have lost a favorite uncle, he meant that much to me. I will miss him, very much.

While I never met Mr. Pembroke, I know his son Graham, a great friend, who is truly one of the nicest people you could meet. I have no doubt Mr. Pembroke was of the same caliber. Martha and I express our deepest sorrow to all of the Pembroke family.

To The Family of Graham Pembroke:
All lives have more or less influence after they cease on earth. Now that your beloved father has passed out of sight, you will find that his pure strong life helps you at many points of weakness and dicouragement. The dignity of his spirit, many of his words, his example are clearly present.
From the first day I met Squirrel_ almost forty years back_ I have had the great privledge to witness his extraordinary humer, his untiring talents and, most especially, his God given gift by providing others the freedom to laugh...
Squirrel's brilliance remains here to shine brightly inside us all.
Words are vain at a time like this, but I beg to assure you of my heartfelt sympathy. May God be with you during this difficult time.
Love, Sue

I was filled with sadness and nostalgia on learning of the death of Sonny (also, Squirrel and Graham). Sonny always was "Sunny," a pleasure to know--funny, intelligent, multi-talented, and delightful! My prayers and thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. There are a few people that come into your life and change your life forever. Graham was one of those people for me. I will miss him so. I was blessed to know and love him.

Graham's spirit was here with me on Sunday Nov. 1 and I knew he had left the area on Monday morning as a perfect v-shaped formation of robust geese flew over my house heading northeasterly. He remains a very busy man... still soaring as always...

Dear Graham and Paige,
My husband and I hadn't seen him in years, but we all went to school together. I called him Sonny, my husband, Coleman, called him Squirrel. Even in high school he was wildly popular and much loved by all. It won't be long before all his classmates including us will once again enjoy his personable charm!
Our sympathy,

Graham and Paige,
So sorry about your dad. I remember so many things about his houses and vehicles and boats and even his (enviable) original art collection. My boys enjoyed going with dad to visit him...he will be missed.

Family and Friends of Squirrel,
Our dad, friend, pal, "partner in crime", etc. has made the transtion to another life. We're wondering what our life will be like without this most
extraordinary person. Who is going to entertain us with stories, keen wisdom, and more? There is now a huge void that I doubt will ever be filled by the likes of another Mr. Squirrely.
I had the pleasure of spending time with him during the past months. We would go out and sit by the water and just chat. One day I asked him what was the greatest thing about his life - I expected him to say, the Lady B!, Greasy Creek, his earth moving equipment, or some other toy of his. He looked me right straight in the eyes and said," the greatest thing about my life is my family and friends. I have had a mutitude of friends that have brought me great happiness, for the most part. My family has started to rally around me as my health declines and I am thankful and blessed to have them." I detected a tear or two in his eyes and the conversation moved on to other subjects.
Squirrel's comment was just about the most touching thing that I have ever heard him say. I think he loved us as much as we loved him. We enhanced his life as much as he enhanced ours. I never was sure where people( family and friends) stood in his life. I feel honored and I hope, all of you feel the same. We were the greatest thing about his life. Think about it...
See all of you on the 14th for the Celebration of Squirrel's Life...
Be good.

There are no words that adequately express the sorrow I feel in the loss of your father. He is missed! What a unique and interesting gentleman. I enjoyed the time I spent visiting with him and I will hold the memories of each of you in my heart for a long time. He is home now!
You are in my prayers,
