Elizabeth Hodgins Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 22, 2010.
HODGINS, Elizabeth Flippen Garry, age 91, of Bon Air, Virginia, died on April 21, 2010, at Thomas Johns Cancer Center, Johnston-Willis Hospital, with her extended family present. The only child of the late Martin Joseph Garry and Marion Turner Garry, Mrs. Hodgins was born July 18, 1918, in Bluefield, West Virginia. She was happily married to the late Donald Albert Van Houten Hodgins for 66 years. They founded a real estate investment company in Flint, Michigan, later expanding it when they moved to Bon Air, Virginia in 1950. Their business included the renovation of a number of historic homes in Bon Air, while also developing property throughout the Richmond area. Up until the time of her death, Mrs. Hodgins continued to be active in the real estate business she and her husband built. She was the only female graduate in the Class of 1941 from the University of Michigan School of Architecture after attending Bluefield College. An avid gardener, Bridge player and artist, Mrs. Hodgins was a founding member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Bon Air, and also helped establish a church in Flushing, Michigan. She and her family spent over 55 delightful summers on the Rappahannock River where she attended Farnham Episcopal Church. Affectionately known to her family as "Goody," Mrs. Hodgins leaves behind her four children and their families, M. Garry Hodgins and wife, Ofelia, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Donald T. Hodgins and wife, Carolyn, of Midlothian, Marion "Betsy" Kimmelshue and husband, David, of Midlothian, and Ann Hodgins of Bon Air; grandchildren, Kimberly Bone and husband, Brad, Christopher Kimmelshue and wife, Kate, Sidarta Parables and wife, Ingrid, Elizabeth Stoll and husband, Kevin, John Walker and Melissa Mittereder, Hilary Huffstetler and husband, Jason, Alison Lehman, Turner Hodgins, Payton Hodgins, Garry Hodgins, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hodgins, and Cody Hodgins; great-grandchildren, Katilyn Urban, Jordan Urban, Jamie Bone, Reagan Urban, Kyle Bone, Ernesto Parables, Lauren Bone, Gracen Bone, and Eric Parables; and godson, Reverend Michael W. Jackson. Graveside services will be held at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 South Cherry Street, Richmond, Virginia, on Friday, April 23, 2010, at 1 p.m., with a reception to immediately follow at Maymont Park Garden Hall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to one of the following: Farnham Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 343, Warsaw, Virginia 22572, or Friends of Hollywood Cemetery, 412 South Cherry Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220.

Dear Mom....It is coming up on two years since you left us. Our memory of you is still as strong as ever and we think of you each day and cherish all the wonderful memories that we each have of you. Both you and Dad taught us how to live, how to treat people, and how to give back to those we love.
Until we meet again....
Your loving daughter - Betsy

Hi Mom,

It's hard to believe that it is more than a year since you left us. We can no longer call you up and hear that wonderful, reassuring "Hello" on the other end. You are in our thoughts and prayers each and every day. We know that you are with Dad in God's good hands.

When our granddaughter Kate married Chris Kimmelshue, I also was blessed to gain a friend in his wonderful grandmother, Elizabeth G. Hodgins. What a joy it was to have her for a friend in those last years of her life. I miss her -- may she rest in peace.
Thanks, Betsy, for this opportunity. I still miss her phone calls. We had such enjoyable visits.
Hope all is well with you and David during this difficult time.
Love and best wishes to you and your family,
Mrs. Ruth S. Legnini

Goody,
You were the next best thing to having a real mother since my mom passed away. I look at your picture every day and remember the love that you showed me unconditionally. You were always there for me with unconditional love and I will love you always and you will forever remain my mom in my heart. Your other son,
Michael, Gloucester, VA

Goody,
From me, that would have made you laugh. I miss your smile every day.
You strengthened my spirit. You healed my soul.
You made me get up.

Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the Hodgins family. We will always remember both Don and Elizabeth as they will be greatly missed. She loved her family dearly and always enjoyed the family gatherings at "the River" as she called it. When we first met they made us feel like we had known them for years, they truly did make you feel as if you were a part of their family. Elizabeth did indeed always have a smile on her face and a giggle on her lips.....she will never be forgotten. Her entire family was her joy and love. It was our blessing to have known her.

Dear Family,
Despite the years of separation, the wonderful memories I carry of your Mom and Dad -- and all of you -- are so much with me. It felt like I was a part of your family, and I'm grateful for the time we all had together. Goody was so "down to earth" and always a pleasure to be around.

We will always remember how kind Goody and Don were to us after we moved into the "old" house in Bon Air. They were good neighbors and good friends for many years. Both will be missed. Our prayers are with you children and grandchildren during this difficult time in your lives.
