Eunice Cummings Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 3, 2010.
CUMMINGS, EUNICE E. (Jernigan), age 89, formerly of Richmond, of River Falls, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009. Eunice was a very stylish woman who worked in retail clothing sales for many years at La Vogue of Richmond. Born and raised near Ahoskie, N.C., she moved to Virginia at a young age and found employment at the Federal Reserve Bank during WWII. She met her husband, John E. Cummings, shortly thereafter and they lived in Richmond until his death in 1998. She was preceded in death by husband, John; parents, Hattie and Ollie Jernigan; and siblings, Stanley, Garvis, Harvey, Eugene, Inez and Irene, of northeastern North Carolina. She is survived by her son, John E. Cummings Jr. of Richmond; daughter Patricia Cummings Rice (Jerome S.), of Prescott, Wis.; sister, Mary Sue Garris of Severn, N.C.; granddaughters, Lauren, Melyssa, Bethany and Allison Rice; great-granddaughter, Elspeth Dempsey-Rice; and many nieces and nephews, including Kay Edwards of Ahoskie. Eunice's love of family and friends was manifested by her charming southern hospitality. She is fondly remembered by all who knew her, and particularly those who enjoyed her southern fried chicken and chicken and dumplings! Services handled by Woody Funeral Home, Parham Rd. Graveside services will be held at Westhampton Memorial Park on January 4, 2010 at 12 noon.

Dear Pat and Eddie - I am so sorry to hear of your lose. I have such fond memories of all of the oldies at Battery Park. Pat, you and I had such fun growing up together and Eddie, I understand you met my younger brother, Bruce (or Lizard) out in Louisa a few years ago. My best to you and your families.
