Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 18, 2010.
McDUFFIE, Evelyn Mabel, 85, of Richmond, passed away April 13, 2010 at Lakewood Manor following a brief illness. Born in Grafton, N.Y., Evelyn was a resident of Richmond for 60 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Birdie Goyer, and is survived by her sister, Vivian White deMercado of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; as well as nieces and nephews in New York, California and Florida. She will be sadly missed by her many friends. Mrs. McDuffie was employed by Bank of America and its predecessors for more than 25 years. She retired in 1989 as head teller of the River Road Branch. Prior to working at River Road, Evelyn was a well-liked teller at the Westhampton Branch of First & Merchants, where the free standing drive-in facility became known as "McDuffie's Palace" from a sign created by a customer and hung in the building. In retirement, Evelyn was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and St. Mary's Hospital. She was an active member of River Road Church, Baptist, for over 50 years, served as an assistant treasurer and member of the Social Committee as well as an active member of the Lydia Class. She was laid to rest on Friday, April 16, at Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, Mass. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 20 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at River Road Church, Baptist, located at the corner of River and Ridge Roads, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to River Road Church, Baptist, 8000 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229-8415.

To Evelyn's Family,
I would like to express my family's sympathy on Evelyn's death. She was a teller at the River Road Branch of First & Merchants bank when we first came to Richmond in 1975, and it was always a pleasure to go in and see her. We also saw her at the Bank once it first became Sovran and then Bank of America. I remember her shared devotion in looking after her mother each winter. After her retirement she became a member of The Commonwealth Woman's Club of which I am also a member. She served as Treasurer for the Club and I was able to continue my friendship with her. I was much saddened when she had to give up her membership of the Club, and I will miss her very much indeed. A lovely lady.

Sincerely, Maggie and David North and family.

Evelyn and I worked together at the River Road branch of the bank. She helped her mom bake the most delicious apple pies each year for my birthday. She was a lovely lady, and my husband and I will greatly miss her.
