James Hammond Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 25, 2009.
HAMMOND, James L., 79, formerly of Lynchburg, died Sunday, November 22, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margarete W. Hammond; daughter, Miriam Ford and husband, Michael, of Richmond; daughter, Elizabeth O'Brien and husband, Tim, of Durham, N.C.; daughter, Lynette Hammond of Richmond; son, James D. Hammond of Virginia Beach; daughter, Barbara Snyder and husband, Brian, of Flemington, N.J.; and eight grandchildren. He grew up in Indiana, served as an Army combat medic in Korea, and was later stationed in Germany, where he met and married Margarete. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Indiana University in 1958, which he attended on the GI bill, and later an MBA from George Washington University. He retired from Babcock and Wilcox in 1993 after 33 years as an engineering manager. Mr. Hammond also ran a small farm in Concord, Va. He was a gifted mechanic, enjoying maintaining and repairing motorcycles and cars almost as much as he enjoyed driving them. He also served as a hospice volunteer for several years. Mr. Hammond was devoted to his wife, Margarete, and he took much joy in his children and grandchildren, whom he considered his greatest accomplishment in life. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
