Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 2, 2009.
ATKINS, Jerry L. "Red," went to be with the Lord after a long and courageous battle with cancer on October 31, 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Atkins King. Left to cherish his memory, are his wife, Ida C. Atkins; his daughters, Crystal Atkins Grublis (Mike), Jane P. Jernigan (Mike), Sarah G. Lipford; and one son, Douglas Parrish Jr. (Hannah). He leaves behind his 10 precious grandchildren, Brandi, Brandon, Cody, Dylan, Emma, Marcus and Jacob, Shelby, Heidi and Brookelynn; also his sister, Linda K. Perryman; and many faithful friends, as well as the wonderful ladies from Hospice of Virginia who made his passing much easier. At his request, family and friends are asked to meet together at his home on Thursday, November 5, 2009 for sharing memories and fellowship between 12 and 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the John's Cancer Foundation, (804) 327-8708, and Hospice of Virginia.

To My Husband

I know that you are just asleep,
I prayed the Lord your soul to keep.
He promised me, His word his true
that one day I shall be with you.

I know that when my work is done
and the Master bids me come,
That God will once again proclaim
another child is home.

And when I reach those pearly gates
and find you standing there,
A promise kept we will proclaim
that the Father truely cares.

Our love for one another came from
just one tiny seed,
And through the years we tended it and
pulled out all the weeds.

So when I get to Heaven 'cause my time
on earth is through,
I'll gladly raise my voice in Praise
for He brought me home to you!

I love you and miss you, Ida

Letter from Heaven
To my dearest family some things I'd like to say
But first of all to let you know that I arrived today,
I'm writing this from Heaven. Here I shall dwell with God above
Here, there's no more tears of sadness. Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through
God picked me up and hugged me and He said "I welcome you,
It's good to have you back again,
you were missed while you were gone,
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly, you are part of my plan
There's so much that we have to do to help our mortal man."
God gave me a fist of things that he wished for me to do
And foremost on the list was to watch and care for you
And when you lie in bed at night, the days chores put to flight
God and I are closest to you . . in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth and all those loving years
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears
But do not be afraid to cry, it does relieve the pain
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
1 wish that I could tell you all that God has planned
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand
But one thing is for certain though my life on earth is o'er
I'm closer to you now than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind
I'm walking in your footsteps, only half a step behind
And when it's time for you to go . . from that body to be free
Remember you're not going . . you're just coming here to me.

God looked around his garden
And He found an empty place.
And then He looked down upon the earth,
And saw your tired face.

He put His arms around you,
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered"Peace be thine."

It broke our hearts to lose you .
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

To My Grandpa

Who would have thought you would go so soon.
With you being gone, my life is so gloom.
I hate the fact you’ve gone away, but in my
Heart, I know you’ll stay.
You taught me right, you taught me wrong.
And with this knowledge I must go on.
With hurt and pain in my heart,
I do know that we’ll never be apart.
You made me laugh, you made me cry.
With those moments, I will make it by and by.
You are gone this I see,
And I know you’re in heaven watching down on me.
I love you papa and I always will,
but losing you is a great big deal.
The suffering has ended and you’ve gone home.
to sit with our Father on his throne.

I will never say goodbye to you my Father
cause I know this is not the end for us to see each other.
You will only be going to a place where there’s no pain nor suffering.
I am happy for you, for you will be with God.
For now we need to go in separate ways.
I remember how your arms hold me and give me strength.
You were always there to listen, love, and defend me in everything.
You were my very best friend.
In my triumphs you were always proud.
I’m very grateful and proud to call you my dad.
Here deep inside my heart you’ll always be.
I would give up everything I have just to hug you one more time.
I remember the last time I hold you’re hand and how you looked at me in the eyes.
If only I could turn back the time I would have never let you go.
I felt the world stops and my heart stop beating when they told me you’re gone…….
How I wish I was only dreaming.
Just like the rain; tears fell down from my eyes, I couldn’t speak for a while.
Thank you Dad….
For always understanding, listening , caring, and loving me for the rest of your life.
The greatest gift God gave me was YOU…….. my Dad…
It’s difficult to let you go but I must…
I must return the gift God gave me…
Till then;
See you in Heaven………

I am very sorry for the loss of your loved one. At times such as these it is nice to know that we have a loving God in heaven who gives us hope. Please read Act's 24:15, it will help in this time of grief.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Crystal,
I am so sorry for your dad's passing. I know he meant alot to you and I will never forgot him either. I remember when he drove the rig and we would play on the cb back in the day. He will be missed. I love you and if you need me let me know.
