John Chernault Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Oct. 9 to Oct. 11, 2010.
CHERNAULT, John "Johnny" or "Big John," 69, of Worsham, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2010 in Centra Southside Community Hospital, Farmville. Born September 13, 1941, he was the only child of the late Elmira Elizabeth McCourt Chernault and Raymond Barksdale "Boo" Chernault. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Ann Bryant Chernault; two children, Danielle Renee Chernault and significant other, Jamie Walters, of Herndon, Va., and Raymond Leonard Chernault and wife (whom Johnny considered a daughter), Billie Jo, of Worsham; and a granddaughter, Rachel Lynn Chernault of Worsham. A 1963 alumnus of Ferrum Junior College and a 1961 graduate of Prince Edward Academy and Worsham School, Johnny worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in Green Bay and Hampden-Sydney for over 40 years. He considered his co-workers as part of his extended family and made lifelong friends that he cherished. In addition to being a member of College Church at Hampden-Sydney, Johnny was an active member of the Prince Edward Ruritan Club and served on the Prince Edward County Farm Bureau Board. He was a former member of the Farmville Odd Fellows Lodge and Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department. Like his father, "Boo," one of Johnny's passions was farming. He loved working hay and corn and raising beef cattle. Between farm chores and Nancy's "honey-do" list, there was never any "down-time" on the farm. Johnny was devoted to his wife, Nancy, of 40 years. He never missed an opportunity to tell friends, family and strangers how he found the best woman ever. The past seven years of his life were made especially sweet by his granddaughter, Rachel. No matter how Johnny's day was going, seeing his "Sugar" always brightened his day. She was a glittering star in his eyes and he looked forward to getting her off the school bus every day so he, Rachel and Nana (Nancy) could work on homework, spelling words or feed the cows. Johnny had just finished teaching Rachel how to drive the E-Z-Go. He made sure that everyone knew Rachel was one of the sweetest gifts he was ever given. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2010 at College Church Hampden-Sydney. Interment will be private. By Johnny's request, he will be buried on the family farm the land he loved. Contributions may be made to College Church, P.O. Box 13, Hampden-Sydney, VA 23943 or The Prince Edward Ruritan Club, c/o Bobby Jones, 2456 Poor House Road, Rice, VA 23966.Puckett Funeral Home of Farmville is in charge of arrangements.

I am deeply saddened to read about the passage of John. He and I were fire fighters while I was a student at Hampden-Sydney. I can still remember when he joined and we had to order his turnout gear. He was a big guy with a gentle spirit who was respected and admired by all. Joe Sposa, Steve Matthews, myself and his fellow H-SVFD fire fighters send you their condolences.

Nancy and Family,

So sorry to hear of your loss. I remember in church when we were little he would always play with us when we would turn around and look at you all. I know he will be greatly missed by all. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you all.

I have been deeply saddened since hearing of Johnny's death at church yesterday. I worked at VDOT's Hampden-Sydney and Green Bay Area Headquarters back when Big John was an Inspector. I enjoyed working with him and I will always value our time together as fellow employees. Please know there are many of us who have you, Nancy, and your family in our thoughts and prayers and we hope to help you all through this trying time.

Nancy and family, I too was saddened when I heard the news of Big John's passing. Although he and I from time to time would not see eye to eye we'd always laugh it off and he'd laugh and tell me he knew I couldn't help it if I was hard headed. Nancy I must say that the best years of my VDOT career were the ones I worked for Johnny. He will indeed be missed. God bless you and your entire family.

To Nancy and family: I was so saddened to hear about Johnny. He was a great man and will be missed so much by so many. I'm glad for the many years we worked together. May God comfort you all during this time and the days ahead and may He always help you each to know that this is only a temporary separation and that Johnny has just gone ahead to Heaven to await the reunion with you all, that will NEVER again be broken! May God Bless!!
