Julia Moncure

MONCURE, Julia Claggett Jones, died peacefully on January 30, 2010 at Westminster Canterbury Richmond after a long, full life. The beloved wife of Thomas Rutherfoord Moncure for 58 years until his death in 2003, she was the daughter of Henry Latane Jones and Janet Temple Jones, and the sister of Janet Jones Ferry, all of whom predeceased her. Julia was born February 17, 1915 at "Cloverly," King and Queen County, the home of her much-loved paternal grandparents, Judge Claggett Bennett Jones and Julia Latane Jones, with whom she spent many joyful childhood summers. Moving to Richmond as a young adult, Julia met "Ruddy," her sweetheart for life; and they married as soon as he returned from the War in 1945. A family of three daughters followed shortly. Julia was cherished by, and an inspiration to, her daughters, Julia Latane Moncure Boysen and her husband, William H. Boysen Jr., of Greenwich, Connecticut, Janet Rutherfoord Moncure of "Totomoi," Hanover County, and Clair Tinsley Moncure and her husband, Richard Fulton Jones, of Albemarle County. She adored and was adored by her four grandchildren, Janet Moncure Boysen, Catherine Rutherford Boysen, William Rutherfoord Boysen and Julia Moncure Jones. She delighted in spending time with them, taking great pride in their accomplishments. Julia was a devoted and thoughtful friend. She continued to enjoy lunch and bridge with "the girls" well past her 90th birthday. Julia was an active member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a member of The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, serving as a volunteer docent at Wilton. She was also a longtime member of The Woman's Club and The Country Club of Virginia. Julia enjoyed life. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2010. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Westminster Canterbury Foundation, St. Stephen's Church, or to a favorite charity.
