Katherine Hurt Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 10, 2010.
HURT, Katherine Mitchell "Kitty," of Mechanicsville, passed away at home surrounded by her family Sunday, January 2, 2009 after a long, courageous battle with cancer and the effects of whole-brain radiation. Ms. Hurt, the daughter of the late Frank Mitchell Sr. and Annie LeSueur Mitchell, was born April 15, 1933 in Buckingham County and was a graduate of John Marshall High School. She began working at United Insurance Company at the young age of 16. One of her proudest accomplishments is the fact that she worked for them for 57 years, retiring as office manager only when forced to by her illness. Kitty will always be remembered for her contagious laugh, her incredible work ethic, her independence and her undying devotion to her children. She is survived by her two daughters, Cathi Lynn Hurt and Cindi Hurt Crawford and her husband, Greg, all of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Lillian Dowdy of Sandston and Mary Jane Jones and her husband, Thurmon, of North Carolina; three brothers, Frank Mitchell Jr. of Sandston, Kenneth Mitchell Sr. and his wife, Margaret, of Mechanicsville, and Raymond Mitchell and his wife, Louise, of Quinton; and her precious granddaughter, Jessica Leigh Archer of Mechanicsville. The family received friends at Monaghan Funeral Home in Mechanicsville on Tuesday, January 5, 2010. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Interment followed at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cullather Brain Tumor & Quality of Life Center, 5875 Bremo Road, St. Mary's Hospital, Medical Office Building South, Suite 108, Richmond, Virginia 23226. The family would also like to express their appreciation to her caregivers and second family, Jeannette Wyatt, Miesha Wyatt, Cynthia Smith, Cierra Smith and Cynthia Curtis, for the love and devotion they showed to "Miss Kitty" in the last months of her life.

Dear Cathi, Cindi and family,
I heard of Kitty's passing yesterday and wanted you to know I'm thinking of you and praying for you at this time of loss. Even though I talk with Frankie on a regular basis, I wasn't aware of your Mom's illness. I have such fond memories of her kind, sweet spirit from family gatherings at Grandma's and Barbara Jean's. I know how much she loved you and know she will be missed.

I wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear about Kitty. I worked with her at United for a short time, but felt like I had known her forever. Your mother always made me feel better when I was having health issues and had given me a little angel to wear on my lapel. I still wear it on my coat to this day and think of her when ever I have it on. She will be missed. She was a wonderful women! I will be praying for your family.

United Insurance Company District #206 would like to offer our condolences to Kitty's Family. I first met Kitty by telephone, calling back and forth between the Offices. I had the opportunity to meet her several times and much enjoyed her company. My best memory of her is her laugh. When she laughed everyone had to laugh with her. It was contagious. She will be sorely missed. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Kitty was always one of my favorite friends of my mother. I remember sitting with her at her desk at United Insurance Company as a kid when I was out of school for sick days. She 'd let me seal the envelopes with her special sponge, which I thought was so cool! She was funny and sweet and was so proud of her daughters Cathi and Cindi. She was an incredible mother, a real role model and a terrific friend. She will be truly missed.

Miss Kitty as we new her at United was a wonderful person. I am a old timer at United 38yrs like she was and i have seen office personel come and go but she was the most dedicated hard working person i worked with. Most important she treated people with diginty and respect and was always helpful to me. I will always have fond memories of her and will always remember her kindness and helpfullness. She is with GOD now and will have no more pain and suffering. My condolences go out to the family in their time of grief.

I have the wonderful privilege of knowing Katherine's daughter, Cathi, in which her greatest of attributes in life are instilled in Cathi. The greatness of a child is a direct reflection of thy parent and it truly is presented with this family. Her memories will live on within everyone she has touched throughout life. I only knew Katherine through the lovely conversions with her daughter Cathi and I have already come to miss her.
