Marjorie CLAYBROOK Obituary

CLAYBROOK, Marjorie Annette Walger, died on July 12, 2011 from complications surrounding a brain tumor. Born in 1940 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and educated at the University of Texas at Austin, Marjorie spent the early part of her adult life as a research chemist and freelance technical illustrator for chemical manuscripts. While living in Naples, Italy, in the late 1960s, she became active in archaeological excavations. Marjorie was an acclaimed artist specializing in art quilt making that incorporated elements of storytelling. Her work has appeared in hundreds of national contemporary craft shows and also has been featured in PBS documentaries on the art quilt movement and numerous books including two by historian Robert Shaw. During her last 10 years in Richmond, Marjorie was actively involved with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the English Speaking Union. She is survived by her husband, James Russell Claybrook. Marjorie was surrounded by devoted friends, especially her dear friend, Margie Booth Liverman. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at St. Stephen's Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va., at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 18. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23220.
