I had the pleasure of working with Mary through the VRA. She was terrific at the work she did and an absolutely wonderful person. Her positive and confident attitude spread throughout the room. I send my sympathy, thoughts and prays to her family and I will miss her.

Betty Sue and Family, we are so sorry for your loss. Mary was so young to be taken away and I can't imagine the pain you are feeling in your heart. Please know that you and your family are in our prayers.

My sincere condolences to Mary`s mother and sisters and of course to other family members. My father , Marvin Akers,a cousin to Betty Sue, Mary`s mother, is one of those greeting Mary in heaven. He loved this family so much..I was blessed to meet them in 1965 before Mary was born I believe the following year.Just received a beautiful Christmas letter telling about each family member.Just want you to know I love you and pray that the Holy Spirit will give you peace that passes all understanding. God bless you! Marvin Akers daughter, Diane Lavender

My sincere condolences to Mary's family. I worked with Mary at Hunton & Williams and was happy to see she had returned. Even though it had been a while, I recognized her smiling face. We recently had a chat leaving work one night. I will miss Mary very much.

The Barnes Family,
I am so sorry for your loss of such a dear person. I knew Mary through the YMCA - she was always smiling and pleasant to everyone. The morning Y crowd (which I am a part of) is such a different group in that everyone seems to know each other and becomes close to one another, she will be so missed by all of us at the Y. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad and difficult time.
Sincerely, Bonnie Messer Smallwood

Mary Barnes taught me a lot working through various bond closings with VRA. She was always patient and positive and I enjoyed seeing her at the VGFOA conferences. She will be sorely missed in the local government finance community.

To my dear friends and second family, The Barnes Family - I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I know Mary is enjoying her reunion with her
Daddy and many other dear friends/family - but it is hard to imagine life here on earth without her. I hope you all find comfort in the thought that you will see her again in our eternal home - and she will meet you with lots of hugs and smiles. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time and always. God bless you all, and remember that you are loved by so many here on earth and in heaven.
Love,
Caroline "Linus" Johns

Mary was one of the first people I met at the Downtown Y when I started there many years ago. She was such a warm, loving person, whose deep affection for her family was apparent in everything she did. I will miss her, and she will always hold a special place in my heart. I will keep your family close in prayer and pray that God's arms will circle all of you giving you strength in the days ahead.

To Mary's Family - I am deeply saddened for the loss of Mary. She not only was a friend but also a kind and caring person who always had a smile on her face. I worked with Mary at Hunton & Williams both times she was here. Mary will truly be missed by all that knew her. May the comfort of God, family and friends see you through this very difficult time.

My heart is saddened to hear of Mary's passing. She was a very special person. Working with her since 1997 through bond closings, she not only was a super professional lady but became a friend through the years. She will truly be missed by all who knew her. She will always be remembered in our hearts. May the Spirit of Christ comfort each of you during this difficult time.
