Mary ELLIOTT Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 5, 2009.
ELLIOTT, Mary Pauline "Polly," of Sandston, departed this life on November 3, 2009. She was preceded in death by James E. Elliott "Jim," her husband of 62 years. She is survived by her children, James Monroe Elliott and his wife, Janis; Charles Thomas Elliott and his wife, Karen; Michael Barry Elliott and his wife, Marjorie; Mary Elizabeth Elliott Harris, and Kurt Muirhead Hanger and his wife, Patricia; her grandchildren, John Hersey, Christopher Elliott, Jonathan Elliott, Alexander Harris, Jennifer Elliott, Marcus Elliott, Sofia Elliott, and Ashley Hanger; her great-grandchildren, M. Chatman Elliott, M. Dylane Elliott and Taylor Hanger. She is also survived by three siblings, Georgia, Julia and Earl. She was an avid sports enthusiast who in high school excelled at softball (state champions), basketball and pole vaulting. While living in Highland Springs, she coached for many years a girls' softball team with the Lassie League. She was a past president of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 144 and worked for decades for Chuck's Market in Highland Springs, Sandston and Providence Forge. An enthusiastic bowler, she bowled on a league well into her mid-70s. At home she prided herself on her irises and her ability to attract humming birds. Her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was reflected in the hundreds of photographs lining her den walls. She and her husband were known for their annual Brunswick Stew event held for many years for family and friends. Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where a service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Washington Memorial Park alongside her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Virginia.

My mother, my friend.
I feel like there's a big hole in my heart now that both of you are gone. I find comfort only in knowing that you are wrapped in daddy's arms. Peace be with you momma, I promise to talk to you often.
All my love,

To all of Polly's family. I am deeply saddened to say goodbye to another of my bowling friend's. I bowled with Polly for many year's, and could not ask for a better friend. God be with the family during this sorrowful time, but rejoyce in the fact, that some day, you all will be together again, in a place that God has prepared for all of us.
Rest in Peace, my dear friend, Polly.
