BARBOUR, Muriel Davis Watson, 79, of Richmond, departed this life November 13, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Davis, and husbands, Sydney Conner Watson of Greenville, S.C. and Thomas Russell Barbour, originally of Four Oaks, N.C. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Claire Barbour; a son, T. Troy Barbour and his wife, Lori Eidson Barbour; two grandsons, Eric Matthew Barbour and Mark Eidson Barbour; a brother, George W. Davis Jr. and his wife, Betty; a sister, Anne Davis Goodman; several nieces and nephews; and many devoted friends. Muriel graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1947 and from RPI in 1951. Her working career was in her chosen field of Recreation, beginning at McGuire Veterans Hospital as a Recreation Therapist. She then worked at the William Byrd Community House as Director of Recreation for nine years, only to return to McGuire as Chief of Recreation service until retirement in 1993. During her career, she was instrumental in beginning the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in 1975 and the visual arts competition, Vet Arts, in 1981, which later became the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. In addition to working with the veteran patients, she was immensely pleased to have the opportunity to advise, train, teach, and assist many trainees to become Chief of Recreation Service throughout the Veterans Administration System. During retirement, she worked at Bliley's Funeral Home and volunteered her time with Meals on Wheels and at St. Mary's Hospital. Muriel was a longstanding active member of Monument Heights Baptist Church, where she taught young people, couples, and adult women bible study classes. She loved Jesus and people and considered it a blessing and privilege to work with and make a difference in the lives of so many veterans and young people. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Monument Heights Baptist Church. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Muriel has requested remembering her beloved dog, Foxy, with donations made in their memory to AARF.

I had many emotions when I heard of Muriels passing. I worked at McGuire during the same time Muriel did and had many occasions to interact with her. So many people at the VA grew to love and depend on her as she was an asset to everyone she came in contact with. I know Ann will miss her and my sympathy goes out to her family. I was a student from Longwood College in January of 1977 when I started my Junior internship in Recreation therapy with Muriel Barbour at the Richmond VA. She was a great teacher and inspiration. I still work in the field of Recreation Therapy and work in the Boston VA.

Muriel was a true "Southern Lady" in every since of the word. She was very devoted to family, friends and the many veterans who had the opportunity to have her in their life. Those of us in the field of Recreational Therapy loved her sincerity and kindness. We will miss her.

Misty, my therapy dog who we rescued, and I had the privilege to have known Mrs. Barbour for only a short time but our visits drew us close to this marvelous lady. We will both miss her. Misty learned to eat ice chips from her hand, and that will always bring her memory back to us. I know whose Hand that hand is now holding.

Muriel, or "Piggy" as we affectionally knew her, was one of our dearest friends when we attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in the 1950s. She helped bring the two of us together and was in our wedding on June 19,1954. She helped form and lead the youth ministry at the church and we always had fun when she was in charge. Her faith in Jesus was real and contagious. She lived her Christianity as she related lovingly to people. Our love and sympathy to her family and friends.

Mrs.Barbour was a wonderful, loving and careing lady.I was one of her many William Byrd Community House children. She was a second mother to all of us. She spoke softly in a way which you knew and felt her love and compasion was deep from her heart. When she placed her arms around you it was a hold that you never wanted her to let go. Her family is in my thoughts and prayers and may God bless you all. May she rest now in the arms of our Lord.

My mother was blessed to eat at the table with Muriel at Lakewood Manor when Muriel was in healthcare.
Muriel took Mother "under her wing" as they laughed and conversed together at mealtimes.

What a delightful lady, Mrs. Barbour was! To her family, I am so sorry for your loss.

My Deepest Sympathy to Muriel's Family. When she was @ McGuire, I drove the Spinal Cord & Nursing Home folks on trips, shopping, restaurants, movies, in parades, etc. - on the old "bus." She was always there for everyone, gently guiding us all. May She Rest In Peace.

Muriel was the best supervisor I ever had (I was her secretary in Recreation when she retired.) We had some great Christmas dinner parties in her home and it was like being with my late mother and family. She guided me in tough times and in good times. We loved Foxy and the many years at the VA in Recreation caring for her. I will miss her and I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Lisa and Troy. (I was formerly known as Cynthia Patterson.)

She did love Jesus and people and cats and dogs and flowers. She made a real difference in my life and the lives of countless others. No words I write here can express what she meant to me. I take solace in the fact that I know she is in heaven, where she stored up so many treasures during a life so well lived for others. An angel has taken flight and I will miss her so.

I like to think that this verse describes what happened to my dear friend Muriel. I am sure she is holding God's hand and will some day be waiting to welcome me to my new home.

Our deepest sympathy to all of Mrs. Barbour's family. She was a really sweet person. I remember years ago when she went to Tabernacle Baptist church she persuaded me and my friends to come on down to the William Byrd Community House and that gave us some childhood memories that we will never forget. She was a wonderful person.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
