Octavius Keyser Obituary

KEYSER, Octavius Gus Jr. "O.G.," of Richmond, born August 14, 1923 in Lancaster County, Va., went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2010. The son of the late Octavius G. and India Stevens Keyser, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After attending VPI (Virginia Tech), he was employed as Supervisor of General Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1978. Musically talented, O.G. played string instruments in a band a number of years at Tides Inn, Irvington, Va., and in the Richmond area. A member of Monument Heights Baptist Church and MMB Sunday School Class, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Marian Bennett Southards Keyser; brother, Charles S. Keyser; sister-in-law, Virginia Southards Waldrop; and nephew, William Edward Waldrop. He is survived by his nephew, G. Robert Waldrop III (Margaret); niece, Patricia W. Hutchins-Maiden (Charles Edwin); two great-nephews, G. Robert Waldrop IV (Sally) and Lee Edward Waldrop (Jenni); two great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews. The family wishes to extend grateful and special thanks to the staff of Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center for exceptional care and love provided O.G. during his stay there. Services private. Contributions may be made to the American Lupus Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.

PAT MY NAME IS STEPHEN THOMAS SAWYER AND I RESIDE IN ROOM 159 AT SITTER AND BAREFOOT AND I NEW YOUR UNCLE AND ENJOYED HIS HUMOR AND PRESENCE. O.G. WAS LIKED BY BOTH THE STAFF AND RESIDENTS ALIKE, WE ARE THE BETTER FOR HAVING KNOWN HIM AND WE DO AND WILL MISS HIM. MR. BROOKS AND I STOPED BY SO HE WAS NOT ALONE, HE WAS NOT ALONE.THE SAYING "HERE ARE THE FOOT STEPS CHRIST PASSED THIS WAY" THIS CAN BE SAID OF YOUR UNCLE.

Pat, I ran into Red several times at Sitter Barfoot while visiting an uncle.I was there last week and went looking for him. I spoke to him, he looked at me and then squeezed my hand. He was a nice gentleman and I am happy I got to see him before he passed. My deepest sympathy to the family.
