Robert Bernard "Buddy" Keyser, Jr., 74, of
Kilmarnock, Virginia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.
Buddy was preceded in death by his father, Robert Bernard Keyser, Sr., his mother, Dorothy Cornwell Keyser, and his beloved wife, Joyce Benson Keyser.
Buddy is survived by his sister, Janet Lynn Christopher (Michael); his children, Bryan Keyser (Carlee), Kimberly Headley (Tim), and Jennifer Moon ("J"); his cherished grandchildren, Ashby Lewis (Hannah), Dexter Lewis (Cassie), Camryn Pittman, Kevin Headley, Mattie Moon, Lindsey Moon, Isabel Keyser, and Elizabeth Keyser, who affectionately knew him as "Peepaw"; and his adored great-grandchildren, August Lewis and Collin Lewis. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom loved him dearly.
Buddy's strong work ethic was evident from an early age. As an early teen, he delivered newspapers throughout Kilmarnock on his bicycle each morning. Before graduating from Lancaster High School, with the Class of 1969, he worked part-time alongside his father at T.D. McGinnes. A star athlete, Buddy participated in baseball, track, and football at Lancaster High School and later played on the legendary local softball team, the Texaco's.
After high school, Buddy attended and graduated from Lear Siegler Institute and built a 38-year career as a Computer Analyst/Programmer with the West Point Paper Mill (formerly Chesapeake Corporation) where he was respected for his dedication and professionalism.
Buddy was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a devoted volunteer with the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the department in 1972 and quickly gained the knowledge and leadership skills that would guide him through a lifetime of service. Over the course of 53 years as an active member, he wore many hats, each with dedication and pride. Buddy served as Engineer, Training Officer, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department.
His passion for service didn't stop at the firehouse. Recognizing that the carnival was the department's greatest fundraiser and a beloved tradition for the community, Buddy brought his wisdom and steady guidance to the Kilmarnock Fireman's Carnival Committee, serving over the years as Carnival Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer, and Vice President. He volunteered at the carnival for more than 60 years, an event he deeply loved and supported. This year, Buddy was honored as the first recipient of the Robert B. Keyser, Jr. Carnival Appreciation Award, recognizing his generous commitment of time, support, and dedicated service to the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department. The award will continue each year in his memory to honor others who share his spirit of service.
Known for his kind nature and unwavering loyalty, Buddy was the true definition of a good person: one who loved deeply, worked hard, and found joy in simple pleasures. He especially loved spending time at the firehouse, playing cards, working puzzles, and sharing laughs with his many friends.
Buddy will be remembered always for his quiet strength, his warmth, and the love he gave so freely to family and friends.
