Robert Sidney Broocks Jr.

BROOCKS, Robert Sidney Jr., 92, departed this life on January 1, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Cooper Broocks. Born in Chase City, Va., Mr. Broocks lived in Williamsburg, Va., for most of his youth. He attended Augusta Military Academy and The College of William & Mary, where he earned his B.A. in Economics in 1941 and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. During WW II, Mr. Broocks served in the Italian theater of operation in both the Army's Military Police and Field Artillery, achieving the rank of Captain. After the war, Mr. Broocks went to work for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia in Richmond. His career with Life of Virginia spanned 36 years before his retirement as a vice president in 1982. He is survived by two sons, Robert S. Broocks III and his wife, E. Catherine, of Charlotte, N.C., and Stephen Christopher Broocks of Richmond. Mr. Broocks is also survived by four grandchildren, William Cary Broocks and his wife, Katherine, Catherine Carter Broocks, Elizabeth Broocks Scribner and her husband, Matt, and Courtney Cooper Broocks; three great-grandchildren; and his beloved cat, Rufus. A memorial service will be held in Richmond at All Saints Episcopal Church on River Road Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Mr. Broocks name to the Richmond SPCA.
