To Edna, Edwilda, and the rest of Mrs. Allen's family, my sincere condolences. Your mother was very welcoming and open with me when I was writing my dissertation on Prince Edward County, as were both of you. It was an honor to spend time with her and I am so glad I was able to capture some of the important history of which she (and you) were a part. Again, my sincere condolences to a wonderful, classy lady.

To the wonderful family of Mrs. Allen: You had a beautiful mother who was always willing to help anybody. I truly enjoyed talking with her whenever I visited her or the Prince Edward County Schools. My love to you. Foster Miles

I join you in celebrating a remarkable lady whose productive, involved, and committed life impacted not only her family, friends, and community, but a nation. In so many ways she contributed to, supported, encouraged, and inspired my own career and writing. Her death marks the passing of a very special generation of beautiful, sophisticated, intelligent, brave, involved, confident, and, yes, even elitist Charles City women. Those of us who were blessed to be raised by these legendary women (and Charles City women were a legend for several generations--even outside the United States I’ve heard them lauded). Those of us who were blessed to be raised by them have big shoes to fill as we try to carry on their exemplary tradition.
