William Hirschman Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 8, 2010.
HIRSCHMAN, William, 85, of Richmond, passed away January 6, 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grand-father, brother, and uncle. Bill was born June 15, 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He volunteered for Coast Guard service during WWII, and served in the Pacific Theater as a Pharmacist's Mate (medic). His experience helping servicemen inspired him to pursue studies in psychology, and he ultimately earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Columbia University in 1953. He spent his career with the Veterans Administration counseling veterans and serving as Chief of the Psychology Service at the VA Medical Centers in Chillicothe, Ohio and Richmond, Va. Bill married the love of his life, Rita, in 1950, and they lived happily together until her death in 2001. Life took him from New York to New Jersey to Ohio to Virginia, and finally back again to Ohio to live near his loving daughter, Laura. Bill loved music, and with his trumpet, led his own swing band when he was young. He adored animals, and would always break into a huge smile when he encountered a dog, cat or a bird. He also loved science fiction and slide rules, calculators and cameras. He was very fond of the community at Congregation Or Ami in Richmond, and served for several years as President there. Bill is survived by his children, Clifford, Laura, and Suzanne; and by his grandchildren, Marc, Benjamin, and Dylan. His gentle kindness and impish sense of humor will stay with us always. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Or Ami at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2010. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Family Services. Arrangements with Bliley's - Central.

Bill and Rita were like second parents to me as a kid growing up in New Jersey, and I often think of Bill's kind gentle ways, and that he always had a smile for everyone. My deepest sympathy to Laura, Cliff and Suzanne, and their familes.

I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing.
I will always remember him as the most gentle, loving and understanding member of my family, and I have particular nostalgia for his visits during my childhood to our family farm in Toms River. My deepest sympathies are with you, Suzanne, Cliff, and Laura, and with your children as well.

I was a close personal friend of Bill and Rita since 1958. To be around them and see and share in the love and respect they had for each other was one of the joys of my life. Bill was all the things that his obituary said about him. I never met another man like him. The world will be a sadder place now that he's gone. However his memory will live on, not just in the hearts of his family, but also in the hearts of all of those whose lives he touched throughout his long life.

We were close friends of your mother and dad. We shared concerts, bridge, and needlepoint with Rita. We're now living in CA and just heard of Bill's death. Please accept our most sincere sympathy. He was a very close friend --as was your mom. Lots of love

I worked with Bill Hirschman at Disability Determination Services for many years. On the days that he was on the schedule to come into the office as a psychological consultant, we would talk and joke. There was something about him I could never put into words until I read his obituary today. "Gentle kindness" that is mentioned in his obituary is that personality trait for which I was at a loss for words. What better legacy could one have. Bill, as he made me call him (not Dr. Hirschman!), was truly a man of gentle kindness.
