Robert Armet Obituary

Armet, Robert E. TROY Robert E. Armet, 67, of Delaware Avenue, died suddenly Friday, February 2, 2007, at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Robert Armet and Marie (Magee) Armet and husband for 46 years of Margaret L. Kolb Armet. Above all his many accomplishments, Bob was a loving husband, father and cherished grandfather, instilling his values from his many days in scouting in his everyday life. Some of his children's fondest memories of Dad/Papa were sharing time together enjoying life's simple pleasures, such as birdwatching, planting and tending flowers in their garden, and reading and telling stories. He was raised in Queens, N.Y., resided in Troy since 1964. He was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, attended Adelphi College in Garden City, N.Y. and graduated from the New York State Police Academy and the Municipal Police Crime Prevention School. Bob was appointed to the New York State Police in 1962, starting his career as a trooper with Troop K at Hawthorne, N.Y. and, in late 1962, Bob transferred to Troop G, Loudonville. As a trooper at Troop G, T/Sgt. Armet worked a wide variety of assignments and also served a period on the New York State Thruway from 1962-1967 when he served as an elected representative for the Police Benevolent Association of the New York State Police, Inc. Upon his return to Troop G, he continued to work varied assignments and in the mid-seventies, became a trained Crime Prevention Officer. He served as a Crime Prevention Officer with Troop G as well as the Explorer Advisor for the State Police Law Enforcement Explorer Post #711. He retired from the New York State Police in 1993 as the assistant director of Public Information and Crime Prevention Services. Bob was cited by the NY State Thruway Authority for his suggestion which outlawed open alcoholic beverage containers from motor vehicles and that provision subsequently was incorporated into the NY State Vehicle and Traffic Law to cover highways throughout the State. He received over 23 commendations for outstanding police work with the State Police, including those from the superintendent of State Police, Troop Commanders, and Zone Commanders. Bob initiated the implementation of a New York State Police 1-800-CURB-DWI line, incorporated "McGruff the Crime Dog" into the program, Smart Safe Kids program, McBear-the Trooper with Ronald McDonald, Scared Stiff and many others. He was a member of the National Troopers Coalition. He was a member of the Troy City Council, a member of the Troy Board of Education for many years, serving as president and active in numerous educational, civic, youth, and church organizations. He received honors from many organizations including the American Legion Department of NY State, the Police Federation, Golub Corporation, Governor's Conference on Crime Prevention, Troy Lodge of Elks and the National Crime Prevention Council. He was a communicant and a member of the Parish Council of Sacred Heart/St. Williams Parish, past officer of the Carroll Hill School PTA, served as president of the PATS Club (Parents, Alumni, Teachers, Students Promoting Arts - Troy Schools), a member of the board of directors of the South Troy Community Center and was a member of the committee of the Uncle Sam District Boy Scouts of America. Bob was a recipient of life membership of the NY State Congress of Parents and Teachers, recipient of the 1977 Silver Beaver - Governor Clinton Council Boy Scouts of America, National Board of Honor and honored by explorer Post #711 of the NY State Police, Troop G. Back in the early 1990s, my dealings with the New York State Police inspired a lot of songs and poetry. The following was dedicated to Bob Armet. It celebrates his faith in community crime prevention.

McGRUFF'S
(For Bob Armet)

A crime is an awful event.
But one that you may prevent
If you're careful and take my advice.
(A word to the wise should suffice.)

Now, some folks might think it unsound
To take the advice of a hound.
But I know my stuff, no blarney or bluff.
I'm that crime-fighting canine McGruff

Neighborhood Watch on patrol
Keeping things under control.
Check all your windows and locks.
Peek first when somebody knocks.

We're taking a bite out of crime;
A little bit more all the time.
It's not rough or tough. It's the simplest stuff.
It'll work or my name ain't McGruff!

Bob was the epitome of a community police officer. He took the idea of crime prevention seriously as a force in making our communities safer and more neighborly. The New York State Police could pay him no greater tribute than by rededicating itself to the principles that Bob espoused.

Peg,
I am sending my deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband Bob. We have been neighbors in Hillsview Heights and attended St Williams Church for many years as neighbors. I am in Myrtle Beach for the winter, but you are in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. I always appreciated it when Bob was there to help my son Jack when he was in the scouts since his father did not live with us.Bob was a great influence on Jack. Bob was a great asset to the neighborhood.

My deepest condolences to Peg and all the Armet kids. (At least I remember you as kids). Bob was a wonderful human being whose visits were always truly enjoyable to me as were all your visits. We had great memories over the many years he trusted me with the care of his family's health and for that I am grateful. God bless you all.

Dear Armet Family,

I would like to take the time to send my deepest sympathy to the entire family. I remember Robert Armet not only a friend, but as a mentor and a friend in Law Enforcement. Robert gave me a start in Law Enforcement, in the Explorers group Post #711 when I was younger and gave me the oppoptunity to advance my career thru the Military Police when a recruiter came to see us, and up to being a Corrections officer in the State of Virginia. I stopped by from time to time when I was home in Troy to see Robert. I would like to wish the family my very best in this sadest of time's. My prayers and Blessings be with you all now and forever.

May God Bless You All!

My sincere condolences to the family of my great former partner on the New York State Police night patrol. Bob was truly a gentle but tough cop and an accomplished man. I referred to him as the "Panda Bear" because he was a gentle giant, and I will miss him greatly. Sincerest regards, Joe Olander
