James COMPTON Obituary

COMPTON James Kendall James Kendall Compton, 63, of Jefferson City, Missouri, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at his home. He was born October 16, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, a son of Kendall and Virginia (Puril) Compton, both deceased. He was a 1967 graduate of Bowsher High School in Toledo. James entered the U.S. Army in June 1967. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving numerous commendations and awards, including the Bronze Star. He was also awarded the Cross of Gallantry with an Oak Leaf Cluster from the Republic of South Vietnam. James retired from the U.S. Army in July 1987, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Following his military career, James worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, until his retirement in 2003. On September 16, 1996, he was united in marriage in Alexandria, Virginia, to Toni Davis-Ferguson, who survives at their home. Other survivors include three sons: Joseph Compton, Jeffrey Compton and Jonathan Compton, all of Alexandria, Virginia; one stepson, Weston Ferguson and wife Diane of Jefferson City; three sisters: Ruth Ann Johansen and husband Kjell of Victoria, British Columbia, Betty Johnson and husband Marvin of Lebanon, Missouri, Lenore Wilson and significant other Gary Hinsey of Toledo, Ohio; one brother, Robert Compton of Toledo, Ohio; and four grandchildren: Raena Ferguson, Sydney Ferguson, Galeyna Luebbering and Leah Luebbering. Friends will be received from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, Jefferson City. Funeral services with full military honors will follow at 4:00 p.m. Private family interment will be held in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. Arrangements are under the direction of Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, 2613 W. Main, (573) 636-3838.
