Today is the 14th year with out you on this side of Heaven for me. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you. I wonder how you would be and what you would look like at almost 30 years old! Not my boy anymore...but a grown man. I miss you sooo very much. You would be proud of Kelife your nephew. He has grown into a responsible young adult who is 25 now! Paul Parker is better....but still Paul. Chaunie has twin grandsons....that you would love. I am retired now so I sit at home a lot....The Josh Project Inc....has taught water safety and swimming lessons in your memory for the last 13 years. Thousands have been in the program and learned how to swim. All stemming from your life of 16 years here on earth. Your memory will live forever after I am gone...,,and I will love you forever and a day❤❤❤....moms

Dear Joshie:
Twenty-six (26) today up in Heaven where you never grow old!! I know you are alright and in a much better place. It does not stop my heart and head from missing you and loving you. Today I celebrate your birth which is a holiday for me. I took a vacation day off to reflect. I will shed tears today and some laughter thinking about our time we had together down here. You always bring a smile to my face when I think of some of our adventures we had. We did a lot together in your 16 years on earth and I am grateful for all of that time. Your legacy still lives on and children and adults are learning how to swim and water safety life lessons because of you and your life. You are my HERO and you will live forever in my mind and in my life. I know where you are and I know you are safe and out of harms way. What more could a mother ask for? I love you so very very much and I always will. Live on in Paradise until we meet again!!!

Wanda, I was moved by your inspirational story on CNN Heroes Award. Your compassion for the greater good moved me to tears. Your son was and is a lucky guy to have you as his mom. I just saw your story on CNN and I wanted to reach out to you. I want to 1st say Congratulations on the Hero Award.
My son just learned how to swim at age 16. Your story has touched me so much that I too am determined to learn how to swim at age 45.
I was raised in Philly and tried to learn several times but gave up after one of my friends almost drowned, in addition to the "Can't get my hair wet Syndrome." However, it is sooooo very important to teach individuals how to swim.
I currently live in Atlanta and want to overcome this fear of water. Your story has definitely inspired me and my daughter who is 9 to sign up for classes. I will keep you posted on how this works out.

What an awesome gift you have given not once but twice. First the precious gift of John-Joshua himself. My deepest sympathies to you from one Mom's heart to another. And 2nd by the awesome gift of life you are bestowing on all the lives who learn how to swim through Joshua's project. My children have had one summer of swimming lessons a year ago but they are not where they need to be. Thanks to hearing about your Josh's Project on CNN, I will be more proactive in ensuring their swimming skills are up to par. Thank you for turning your heartache into hearwork. The Josh Project is a great example of what can be done in any community to teach children and families to swim and enjoy the water. Swimming is an important life skill; it not only saves lives, it is good exercise and great fun for everyone. Everyone should learn how to swim and all children should have an opportunity to become swimmers.
Thank you Wanda Butts

It has been 6 years ago today that you left me and went to a "better place." it still still feels like yesterday when we were laughing together, playing, talking and just being friends. Going places and meeting people. I am still not able to not cry on this day. I am trying to be strong and tell myself that you are up there looking down and watching over me. I am glad to have my own personal angel in you. Doesn't mean for one minute that I don't miss you and love more and more each day. A lot of good things have happened since you left. Your life really made a difference in my life and in the life of others. I now know that swimming is a life skill and believe me if you were born today - i would have you in swimmings lessons in 6 months!! I know now and love to share my knowledge with others! God Bless you Josh - Live on in Paradise - and I will see you when I get there. I love you dearly....moms

I am a 49-year-old, physically-active African-American female. I took it upon myself to learn to swim this year, knowing its importance to my overall fitness and water safety goals. This has been a difficult experience, to say the least, but I'm now swimming the length of the pool...learning to respect the water rather than fight it.
I've been humbled in my quest to learn this elusive skill. All told, learning to swim has taught me many lessons. One of the important ones: Have no fear. If you have doubt or fear, confront it and move beyond it. Be courageous.
I invited countless individuals to take lessons with me with no takers. But clearly swimming is a skill we all should master. I thank you for The Josh Project and your passion. Continue to be an inspiration.

I just watched on CNN heros the story of the Josh project. I think this is an admirable program, and a wonderful way to memorialize a beautiful life cut short. I am an African American Woman, I did not take swimming lessons until I was an adult, but I started my daughter in swim classes at the age of 5. Neither of us will make the olympic team, but we continue to practice the life saving skill. I will think of Josh now every time I go to the pool and will always encourage others to "learn to swim, it can save your life."

Hi Josh.
I just watched your mother on CNN.com. Your mother is such an inspiration! What a wonderful organization she started. And what a fabulous way to share your memory with other children.
I am a mother of a 7 year old who has never learned to swim. Just recently I started taking lessons with my daughter. I want her to be able to feel safe in the water. Hopefully by the end of summer we will both be swimming.
I will show my daughter your Mom's video to encourage her!

It has been way too long since I have written to you in here. I talk to you everyday and every night but November is much too long to write. I hope you will forgive me. Believe me I have missed writing/talking to you. So much has happened since November. We had our 4th Annual Soul Food Extravaganza, where the attendance was the best it had ever been. We did a special presentation to our students in the program and their parents. We had over 30 students in attendance. I think that is what helped to increase our attendance. We must remember that we are all about the children and saving their lives by teaching the sport of swimming.

Hello my son Josh:
The 80th Birthday Celebration yesterday for Mama was fantastic!!! I thank God for blessing the affair and answering all of the prayers that went forth before Him regarding the occasion. GaGa was just beautiful and almost overwhelmed. She received massive birthday cards, money and gifts. She was very grateful and humble. All 4 of her children were in attendance and grandchildren, cousins, dear friends and church family. It was definitely an affair to remember. Your sister chose to make sure you were represented there by reading you "Flame" poem that you wrote for and about your GaGa. I knew you would show up at the celebration because you were never one to miss a good party!!:)
Our California family was well represented, TT, Shaunie, Rac, Gammie, Alex & Bob were all here. I ask you to continue being my "guardian angel" up there and keep looking down on us!
Live on in Paradise and Rest in Peace.

Hello my son Josh:
It has been a long time since I have written - but make no mistake - you have been and always will be on my mind and in my heart daily! Today is a "snow day" and I remember that you always did love these days! I even got one today - so you know the weather is really bad. Good day to work on Josh Project! We are planning something big this year for our/your 5th year anniverssary. I am excited about what Jesus is going to do. We are also planning an 80th Birthday Celebration for Ga-Ga which is also very exciting too. Can't wait to see what Jesus has planned for that too! We are on a month break from swimming lessons - and with all of this snow it is right on time. Lessons attendance has been the best it has been for winter months. I think parents are realizing the importance of the childrens lessons now in the winter to prepare them for the summer months. I am very grateful! Your life gave my life meaning and is giving new life to so many others! I thank God every day for you and your lifetime of 16 years. I give God all of the Glory. I was in Nassau County New York yesterday doing a presentation on The Josh Project and of course talking about you!! It was a very emotional speech because I came up right after a 8 min video which I talked about 8/6/06 for about 3minutes. I made it through and at least 10 people came up to me to say encouraging and complimentary words about the speech and the piece. I know that I was meant to be there doing what I did. I was also able to adopt me another mentor in the person of the CEO Cassana who has lots of experience at what he does and gave me some direction as to where we can go with our JP. I am truly grateful for the mission and my journey. I love you so very much and I thank God for your 16 years here on earth. We celebrate 21 years this year. To God Be the Glory! The next morning my brother Gregory who was at Wanda's house said that at 9:30 am the lights started blinking on and off and they felt it was Josh blinking them because his mother always had to tell him "boy turn off the lights." But not until the Hillsdale Sheriff called at 9:45 and said they brought him up out of the water at 9:30 were we positive of the fact. He was letting us know not to worry - he was in Heaven cause that could only have been a sign from above. The Lord bade him to lay back and just float. As he was floating on the raft, I am told by his friends as he was getting further out they asked him was he ok? I can hear his words and tone of voice now: "Yea - I'm Ok." he said, and just floated on to Heaven!!! He didn't suffer, he didn't fight, he didn't scream - he just kind of drifted smoothly into the arms of our Lord.

I will call it a tribute to you: It is entitled "Floating to Heaven" None of us know when our earthly journey will end or when God will call us home. My nephew John-Joshua who I called Meat - short for Meathead did not know.

Hi Joshie:
Well - yesterday the 1st day of Session #8 we enrolled a record 78 students!!! We would have had more but that is our capacity. that is the 1st time I can remember that we hit capacity. It was a beautiful sight to see so many brown faces in the swimming pool learning how to swim!!! I am sooo grateful to God for your life and your legacy. Look at all of the lives you are saving from your life. You were born for a purpose and you had a mission to do. You did it and now you are "safe in His arms." I love you so very much. Not day goes by that I don't think of you. Not a week goes by that someone comes in the office talking about you or somewhere. I thank God that You were my son. Rest in Peace - and live on in Paradise. I look forward to seeing you again and all of our loved ones one day!!! To God Be The Glory!! Moms

Hey Joshie:
Just wanted you to know about the interview yesterday with Christine Long of ABC 13 Action News. I met her at the SFHS Swimming pool and she shot pictures of me in the water. Afterwards we talked about you of course and the journey your life has taken my life and the lives of so many other people. I estimated that sine the beginning of The Josh Project in June 2007 we have touched nearly 500 lives!!! Isn't that amazing. I felt real good about the "piece" that was shown last night on the 11:00 news. Lots of people saw it tooo - because today when Pnut and I were out at the mall - a few people commented about having seen it last night. This Memorial Day Monday we are to be on World News tonight ABC talking about The Josh Project and what we do and why we do it. Naji in San Francisco did a 8.5 swim in the Pacific Ocean today in memory of you and what The Josh Project stands for and he is donating all proceeds to our mission. He is someone sent by God - to help us along the way. I truly thank God for him. Your life has made a difference is so many other lives. Especially my life - your drowning death gave my life meaning and purpose. Your death changed my life forever!!! I am so very proud of you and your life! Rest in Peace my son and live on in Paradise. I love you and Oh How I Love JESUS!!! Moms

We were awarded an Northwest Ohio Black Media Award on 5/13/10. The event was at the Ramada Inn. The Josh Project had 2 & 1/2 tables there to represent us. I stood tall and I could the presence of the Lord standing with and I could feel your presence. I know you were smiling your kool aid smile. It was just beautiful. I am so grateful to God once more and again for His Power, His Presence and His Peace. I shall never forget.

Hi Joshie:
Last week I was in Daytona Beach, Florida to receive an "Award of Merit" from the National Water Safety Congress for our work in The Josh Project. Let me tell you I was so very very proud to be receiving that award. That was the second award from that Organization. The first was a "Letter of Commendation" that we received in April, 2007. I thank God for the awards! I was able to walk the ocean and meet lots of kind friendly and encouraging people. Next week I have been invited to speak to parents at the Beach House, and we are going to the African American Festival, the Juneteenth Festival at the Art Museum, the Health Fair at Wayman Palmer UMCA and we are busy getting the word out about the importance of children learning the life skill and life sport of swimming. Your life is giving life to others!!! Today I saw this lady named Renai can't remember her last name but her children went to school with you at TAA. We spoke lovingly about you - as always. It brings that "kool aid" smile to my face when people come into the office and know you and speak highly about you. I use to cry - but now I don't feel sad - it makes me happy. I know it makes you happy too!!! I love you so much and always will............I am grateful to God for your life and for you being my #1 son. (only I know) Live on in Paradise - and Rest in Peace. I will see you again when I get there!!!

Hey Joshie:
I can't believe I haven't written since January! So much has happened. The Josh Project has been nominated to receive an "Award of Merit" from the National Water Safety Congress. I am going to Daytona Beach Florida on March 28 to receive the award!!! PTL I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity. We also are in collaboration with the 4H organization which is an affiliate of the Ohio State University who will provide free swimming lessons the the girls at Ella P. Stewart Academy School. We are starting with the kindgergartens. Their first lessons begin on March 20th. Also - at the last JP Board Meeting we established another attorney and television broadcaster to become supporters/board members! We are growing and moving upwards and for this I thank God and I give God all of the Glory!!! Attendance is steady on our lessons and I am able to be in the lane by myself and do my laps!!! I am still using fins and the kick board BUT I am in the water and I truly enjoy being there. Pnuts has been with me the last 2 or 3 weeks and is a great big help and supporter. I love her and oh how I love Jesus and of course I love you my best and onlyist son! Rest in Peace son - I am grateful that you are my own personal "guardian angel" watching over me. I love you so much and I am so very very proud of you. Live on in Paradise...................

Hey Joshie:
This Saturday at our Josh Project swim lessons I did 3 laps!!! Can you believe it? I am so grateful to God for the courage and the strength. I give HIM all the Glory. I use a kick board and fins BUT I go from one end of the pool to the other. It was a long time coming - but I made it. What an accomplishment for me. Also we have twin boys who gave me big hugs Saturday because of how far they have come in JP. When first came to JP they were afraid (like me) but now they have confidence in themselves and are swimming. It brings tears to my eyes to think of the lives and the good that is coming from your life. You were/are truly one of God's Angels!!! Your life was not lived in vain! I love you soooooo much!!! And Oh how I love JESUS!!! Live on in Paradise and Rest in Peace and keep watching over me!! very very

Well Joshie - GOD did it!!! Our 2nd Annual Winter FUNDraiser was a success!! We had over 200 people and raised oer $4,000 !!! We are truly grateful to God for His favor. The music & soloists was excellent! Everyone seemed to have enjoyed theirselves and the food. We had turkey, dressing, fried chicken, bar-b-que pigs feet, mac & cheese & more plus unlimited desserts. T thank God. We also had lots of publicity before a great article in The City Paper, the Sojurner Truth, a 25 minute segment on "Bridges"....it was wonderful. I would say awesome but I save that word for God only! I am sure you were please because I could feel your Spirit. The lady named Mary & her husband from Bird Lake told me she never left you and you were not alone and they looked for you that day God was calling you home. It was pleasure to meet her and it made me happy! It was God's will the way she found out about the event - it was just meant to be. I love you son and I often feel your presence.....Rest in Peace - To God Be The Glory.......In His presence, His power & His peace - I love you.moms

Hi Joshie:
Tonight 9/15/09 we were on HBO Sports w/Bryan Gumble in a sgement on swimming diversity featuring Cullen Jones a Olympic Gold Medal winner (who I think favors you) and a great story about The Josh Project. I went to Bird Lake for the very 1st time with the HBO crew. I must say it was quite an experience. I saw where you were on that fatal day in August - where you probably took your last breath of life as we know it here on earth. It was a peaceful and beautiful place. I got to see where the picture of you is and how they tell the story of the ropes place there and why. It is very memorable and touching. I was very proud to be here as your mother telling the story about you and the Josh Project. How from the tragedy of loosing your life to drowning - from that we are triumphant in teaching swimming and water safety in your honor and memory. I love you Josh..........vv ma

My Joshie:
It has taken me this long to tell you about the 3rd Annual FUNdraiser of The Josh Project, Inc. It was fantastic and we are still collecting money! We had lots of food, good gospel music from a great gospl dis jockey, the TPD, Sheriff's Dept, US Coast Guard, YMCA, AT&T, Ohio Donate for Life, Health Dept & Safe Kids Smoke Trailer (that you and I went thru one year at Southern) we also had t-shirts that your uncle Fatjak sold to everyone that walked past his him. We had a ball - Jasmine, Kendall, Jonell helped from the church plus several adults from the church. We raised over Six thousand dollars - which is now up to seven thousand after this week plus our matching funds plus our church collection on Sunday morning plus......it goes on and on. I can't tell you everything because I know I would forget something or someone and I don't want to slight anyone. I just know that none of it would happen without The LORD. I thank God every day in every way for everything. I have a lot of cleaning to to now because HBO Real Sports is coming to my house on Monday to talk about you and The Josh Project. Again, I thank God for the opportunity to educate about the importance of everyone knowing how to swim and becomeing water safe. I know for sure that "swimming is a life skill". I love you Josh and oh how I love JESUS!

It's been 3 years, but sometimes it seems like yesterday that our world was turned upside down by your transition from this life. We're soldiering on and your mother's strength, dedication, and vision has touched so many on your behalf. I know the love of GOD is surrounding you and I thank GOD for the time we had. You are ever in my heart.

Today is the 3rd year anniverssary/celebration/memorial of your transition from earth to Heaven. I know that you are in a better place and better off. I do still miss you and love you - but I know that I must keep it moving and keep on living. Your life was not lived in vain - because of your life and death others are being educated to the facts of water safety and learning the importance of knowing how to swim. Swimming is a life skill that everyone should know. I know it now - and so do many others because of your life. I am so very very proud of you and proud to be your mother. I thank God everyday for you my son - and I thank God for Jesus His son who also gave His life so others would live. Live on in Paradise and Rest in Peace!!!!!!! I am so very proud of you. I just got a $3,000 contribution pledge and 2,000 more if we raise our 5,000 which would meet our goal of $10,000.00 which would cover the cost for students, lessons, pool time & instructors for 6 months. I thank God for meeting our goal. We mailed out close to aroud 300 pieces of mail plus we have flyers posted is several places and I thank God now for all He has done is doing and is going to do. You did not die in vain or for no reason. You died so others could live and learn how to swim and the importance of water safety. It happens more than I ever knew about. Lately I have been crying alot for you because it is close to the time when I lost you. Thursday will be 3 years to the day - 3 days before my birthday. Always in 3's. Hey Joshie:
Last Sunday was Mothers Day. Of course I thought about my son Josh. I still have the Mothers Day card you made for me the year you went to Heaven. Mr. Steve found it somewhere in your class at Positive Choices and brought it to me. I didn't bring it out this year though. I focused more on my own mother and being grateful for her and my father. I cooked dinner for them and it was very good. Manne who now calls himself Monnie came over and brought me a long stem white rose which I thought was very nice and thoughtful. Of course we talked about you too. My swimming lessons are going good. Yesterday we signed up about 12 new students so The Josh Project is going strong teaching swimming and water safety. I have changed my license plate to "lyfsavr" because I am Toledo's LifeSaver and you are the reason why. I love you and I love Jesus. Live on in Paradise and Rest in Peace.

Hi Joshie:
Guess what? Today I took my first swimming lesson!!! I am going to learn how to swim. I am determined. I did very well today and it will get better and better for me. I think of you and think that you would be very proud of me for learning how to swim. I believe that swimming and aquatics are going to make a hugh difference in my life. It already has of course but even more so once I master the sport. Here again it is because of you and your life. What a difference your short life of 16 years has made - you touched so many and changed so much. I thank God for blessing me with you everyday. You are gone from this earth - but your Spirit, your life, your love and your legacy will live forever. To God be the Glory. I love you Josh - and Oh How I Love Jesus!!!!!!
