Martha Ellen



Martha Ellen Brumback, age 84, of Orlando, FL passed away on November 2, 2012. Ellen was born on September 27, 1928, in Toledo, OH to Frances Tiedtke and John Sanford Brumback. She was their eldest child, arriving 12 minutes ahead of her twin brother Charlie. She grew up in Toledo, attending Ottawa Hills public schools and then attended Abbott Academy from 1944-1946. After graduating from Abbott she attended and graduated from Wellesley College in 1950 with a degree in Economics.

She had a successful, varied and interesting career including serving as secretary to the Dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration and executive assistant to former President Herbert Hoover. Thereafter she moved to Florida and worked in various capacities for the Republican Delegation of the Florida Legislature and aided the Bureau of the Census serving as the Central Florida Director of the effort to document the population of Orange and Seminole Counties in 1970. She spent the remainder of her professional career managing family real estate and financial affairs including serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Van Wert (Ohio) National Bank.

Ellen was committed to her community and gave her time generously to several charitable and civic organizations including the Orlando Museum of Art, the Salvation Army and the Sun Valley, Idaho Symphony. Ellen was a member of the Junior League of Greater Orlando, the Rosalind Club, the Country Club of Orlando and the local Wellesley Club. She was a member and generous supporter of Park Lake Presbyterian Church.

Ellen and her sister Frances spent more than 30 summers in Sun Valley, enjoying many outdoor pursuits such as hiking, fly fishing, gardening and bird watching. They introduced many family members and friends to their beloved Idaho.

She is survived by her siblings, Charles T. Brumback of Sarasota, Frances M. Brumback of Winter Park, John S. Brumback (Susan) of Orlando and Cynthia A. Brumback (Ming Wang) of Washington, DC; by her nephews and nieces, Charles T. Brumback Jr. (Kim), Anne B. Meyer (Ted), Wesley W. Brumback (Paula), Ellen B. Allen (Lindsey), Cynthia F. Brumback, Helen B. Leonard (Tony) and Christine B. Brumback, and by grandnieces and grandnephews, Sarah A. Meyer, Allison L. Meyer, Andrew N. Allen, Emily L. Brumback, Mitchell B. Allen, Sarah E. Brumback, Charles T. Brumback III, Anthony C. Leonard III and John B. Leonard.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Lake Ivanhoe Chapel, 301 NE Ivanhoe Blvd., Orlando. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 8 at 3 p.m. at Park Lake Presbyterian Church, 309 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Orlando Museum of Art, 2416 North Mills Ave., Orlando, FL 32803 and the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 540657, Orlando, FL 32854-0657.

My family's prayers are with the Brumbeck family. Ellen was such a strong and dedidcated board member and supporter of the Orlando Salvation Army...I loved serving with her and we will miss her! My 2yr old twin daughters will have a special place in their hearts for Ellen, her baby gifts of beautiful blankets are still their most cherished possessions.
