CHAUNCEY LUFKIN Obituary

Chauncey Forbush Lufkin, Jr. Chauncey Forbush Lufkin, Jr. (Lucky) died on July 21, 2014 in his home, surrounded by his family. Lucky, born May 28, 1927, grew up in Rye, NY with his parents Chauncey Forbush Lufkin and Margaret Wende, and brothers Peter and Dan. Lucky attended Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT before enlisting in the Navy in 1945 at the age of 17. He then graduated from Andover Academy in 1947 and Yale University in 1951. After college he went to work for Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation in Washington D.C. In 1953 Lucky married Elizabeth Heard and promptly transferred with Owens-Corning to Los Angeles. Two children (Wende and Chauncey) were born while living in Southern California, and two more (Lisa and Andy) joined the brood when Lucky and his family moved to Menlo Park, CA. Lucky worked for Owens-Corning for 17 years before starting his own business, Hytec, Inc., a fiberglass manufacturing company in Olympia, WA. Lucky built and grew Hytec, Inc. for 21 years before selling the company to Philips Industries in 1986. Lucky is remembered for his warm dimpled grin, sense of humor, and unending kindness. He was a quiet gentleman and a good listener. Many knew him as a man of integrity, genuine strength, and humility. Lucky was adored by his family and all who knew him, and he adored them, especially Liz, his wife of 61 years. He loved the outdoors. Lucky moved his family to Lakewood, WA, a place he remembered fondly after spending a summer logging for St. Paul and Tacoma Lumber Company and residing at Lakewold on the weekends. Lucky introduced his family to hiking, backpacking, and boating. He was an avid fly fisherman, casting in local waters as well as in faraway spots. Lucky could often be found tying his own flies in the family room. Lucky was a generous donor, enthusiastically sharing his time and resources to education, Parkinson's Institute, and Lakewold Gardens. Lucky is survived by by his wife, Elizabeth Heard Lufkin, his sons Chauncey Forbush Lufkin III of North Palm Beach, FL, and Andrew Heard Lufkin of Los Altos, CA, daughters Isabel Wende Fellows of Tacoma, WA, and Elisabeth Lufkin Collins of Charleston, SC, and grandchildren Ephraim Peniston, Isabella Amaya and Rubiel Fellows; Chauncey, Annie and Alexandra Lufkin; Wells, Zach and Eliza Collins; and Sophia and Marston Lufkin. The family would like to thank Cathie Rovetta-Brown and Isabel Muiruri for their exceptional devotion and care. A private service for the family will be held this week. On October 4th there will be a celebration of Lucky's life at 5:00 pm at Lakewold Gardens. Donations can be made to Multicare Hospice at P.O. Box 5200, Tacoma, WA 98415, or the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation at 57 West 57th Street, Ste. 904, New York, NY 10019.

Lucky holds a special place from my time as a child and young adult. Given my parents were best friends with Liz and Lucky, we had several memorable adventures together. We tend to forget things from our childhood, but my first airplane trip with my dad to stay with the Lufkins is still there. Backpacking in fields of flowers at Mount Rainier was another. I think of Lucky and see a smile.

I am sorry to hear of Lucky's passing but thankful to have known him. When he wanted to expand his business in Denver, he came calling. He was always energetically delighted to see me and took an interest in my well-being. Such a delightful man to be around.

I am so blessed to have met the Lucky and Liz Lufkin clan by way of your niece Alison Wende Lufkin. Even though we only met a few times, those encounters are memories I cherish.
