Jack Pearson Obituary

Jack W. Pearson MD passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Cornerstone Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Jack was born in Joliet, Illinois in 1929. He will be remembered for his uncompromising integrity, hard work, fun loving nature and his love of golf and swimming. Devotion to his family and friends and his passion for medicine were his main priorities. As a professor of medicine, he touched the lives of hundreds of medical students with his strong leadership and knowledge of medicine. Dr. Pearson had an extraordinary medical career starting as the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Orleans, France in the military in 1958 and ending as the Emeritus Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona college of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona from 1996 on. Dr. Pearson graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 and the University of Illinois Medical School in 1953. He spent his Internship and Residency at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado from 1953 - 1958. He was granted a Fellowship at Walter Reed Institute of Research at Washington, DC in 1962. Dr. Pearson was the Examiner and Director Protem of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1973-1994, Consultant to the Army Surgeon General in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1968-1996, Consultant to Army OB/GYN Residency Programs 1973-1996, the editorial consultant to the American Journal of OB/GYN and JAMA from 1975, the Book Reviewer for Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics from 1978-1984 and Archives of Medicine from 1966-1973, Chairman for the National Program Committee, APGO, in 1979 and on the Consulting Staff at Tucson VA Medical Center from 1983-1996. Dr. Pearson also received numerous awards and honors during his long career including Director and President of the Southwest Obstetrical and Gynecologic Society in 1997, Legion of Merit, & Zimmermann Award. He served 20 years in the Army where he rose to the rank of full Colonel. Dr. Pearson wrote over 50 publications concerning OBGYN along with book chapters and abstracts. He also spoke at over 50 presentations from 1986-1996. After retirement, he kept involved by continuing to teach at Gynecologic Preoperative Conferences and as a consultant for the National Medicolegal Consultant for Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was survived by his wife, Hope; his son, Jack Pearson; his daughters, Deborah Pearson, Joan Friedman and Hope Dolan. He was also survived by his brothers, Dan and Richard Pearson; nine grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, many other loving relatives and friends. His courage, smile, and a zest for life kept him eternally young and gladdened the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed. The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Thomas the Apostle Chapel. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel (742-7901).

So sorry to hear about Jack's passing. As one of his past Intern's and Resident, hardly a day goes by I don't think of him and how much I appreciated all he taught me and how much I admired him and his abilities. He was one of the finest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. Our thoughts and prayer go to you as well Joan.
