James Vincent Luvera
Utica, NY
Mr. James Vincent "Jimmy" Luvera, 64, passed away, after a long struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at the Mulberry Home of the Sitrin Health Care Center. Jimmy was born in Utica, March 2, 1947, a son of Vincent "Jim" Luvera and the late Caroline (Uzdoniewicz) Luvera. He was educated in local schools and was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. Jim later served in the US Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. As a young man, Jimmy began working at Caruso's Pastry Shop, delivering for them in Utica and Syracuse, and has done this part-time right up until his illness. He had a very close relationship with the Caruso family, especially Ricky, who has been a very devoted friend to Jim and was always there for him. Jim was employed for many years as a records keeper at GAFB and more recently was working at AFSA for several years. Jimmy enjoyed spending time with his many friends and was a regular at the Radisson Hotel and the Casino. He was a caring friend to all and in turn they have all been there for him, especially during his illness. He is survived by his dad, Vincent "Jim" Luvera; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Ben Scalise; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Dominick and Linda Luvera, Carmen and Dori Luvera, Joseph and Patty Luvera, and Peter and Tracy Luvera; his sister and brother-in-law, Rosalie and Carl Peters; his nieces; his nephews with whom he shared a very close and special relationship with; also many cousins and friends. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Friday (today) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger Street, corner of Mohawk Street, in Utica. The family would like to thank his many friends and staff at the Mulberry House of the Sitrin Health Care Center for the loving care and attention shown to Jim during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association or the Central New York Veteran's Outreach Center. Donations may be made at the funeral home.
