Arthur Moore Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 26 to Apr. 27, 2014.
Arthur James Moore March 12, 1929 - April 22, 2014 Passing peacefully at the Windemere Care Centre, Arthur was a machinist, labour activist, keen political observer, avid reader and writer, and beloved father and grandfather. Arthur was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Joan (née Witney) and brothers Joseph, David and Walter. He is survived by son Charles (Anna Cooper) and grandsons Tobias and Ronan of Vancouver. Arthur was born in London, witnessed the Blitz, and served in the Royal Navy during the Korean War. He arrived in Canada in 1955, on a trip working 'around the world' which ended (happily) in Vancouver with marriage. With Joan, Arthur fought for the creation of Medicare in Saskatchewan, served as IAMAW Local president with a strike mandate in Vancouver, and was active in the nuclear disarmament and peace movements of the 1980's and 1990's. Fondly remembered as a story-teller and humourist, Arthur's life will be celebrated at a private residence, 1349 E. 2 Ave. Vancouver, May 10 at 3 pm.

I have fond memories of Art. Most of them involve some type of work on "the boat". I always referred to him as Mr Moore as I had been taught to reference all parents of my friends. At least I did until one summer evening with "the boat" in dry dock on Granville island, and the two of us were applying some final finish to bottom paint on "the boat". I had just addressed him with a question and he turned to me and said "Call me Art, Gino". It was then I knew that I had made a friend. I enjoyed his company that fine evening and especially enjoyed the rest of the opportunities, as occasion allowed, when I could talk and banter with Art.

I had the pleasure of working with Arthur for many years, and remember him as one of the kinder more gentle crew members. Always had time to say hi and talk. He will be missed.
