Lance T. Graham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2005.
Lance T. Graham was a towering 6-foot-5, but tenderhearted, "a gentle, gentle giant." "A crooked little old smile, mischief in those eyes," said family friend Suzanne Hildebrand. "I don't know anybody who disliked him." Graham, 26, of San Antonio, Texas, was killed May 7 when suicide bombers struck his convoy in Anbar province. He was based in San Antonio. Graham graduated from high school and volunteered with local fire departments while attending fire academy classes. "He was strong as an ox," said Mike Mulroney, who took classes with him. "As big of a guy as he was, he was approachable. He'd give you the shirt off his back if he could." With a friend, Graham painted water towers, sold Christmas trees, took an impromptu ski trip to Colorado and nearly went to work on a fishing boat in Alaska. He is survived by his mother, Sherry Graham, and father, Joe Graham, who served in Vietnam. "We talked about the fact that you tell your children what you did, and when they follow in your footsteps it sometimes makes you proud, and sometimes it scares you," Hildebrand said.

Lance and family,
You were thought of so much during the 10 year memorial event held in SA and Austin. We were able to meet your brothers. They are making sure you are not forgotten and that your motto "Die Strong" is remembered. We visited your local drinking hole and had toasts to all. Stan Mayer speaks of you with such Marine brother love and respect. You are an American hero and we will never forget just how amazing you were.

To the Family and Friends of Lance Cpl. Lance T. Graham: I had a very small part in Honoring this Hero. I retrived a geocoin on my visit to GroundSpeak Headquarters in Seattle on July 26th, as I claimed my 1000th geocache. The special geocoin honors his service and life. I placed it in a very specific geocache in Montana. My hope is to keep a memory of Lance OUT THERE. Many others will become aware of this fine man. www.geocaching.com

Lance,
I never knew you, but being the mom of Sgt. Michael Marzano, I feel connected. Know that you are not forgotten. When I talk of the ambush, I always speak of the four of you as a group. You are all my heroes.
Your sacrifice for my freedom came at a heavy cost and please know I appreciate that cost. It is a high price to pay to don the uniform for a country. Job well done.

To the family of LCPL Graham:
I was Graham's roommate during MOS school, and just wanted to say that he is one of those genuinely great guys that I've had the pleasure to meet. He used to let me use his cell phone to call my parents under the condition (usually after a beer or two) that he also spoke to them, always in a Scottish accent. This memory of him always brings a smile to my face.

To the family of Lance. I am Michael's mom who was also lost in that same ambush. I know this time of year is so painful. Like you, I lost my Heavenly Hero on the 7th, told on the 8th which was, at that time, Mother's Day. It seems as if we have to walk this nightmare for almost a week every anniversary. I am sorry for your loss and wanted you to know, I was thinking of you and the other 2 Gold Star families that we are tied to, on this 4th anniversary.

To the family of Lance CPL. Lance Graham,
I am so sorry for your loss. I read your son's heartbreaking letter in NEWSWEEK and was moved to write a composition for cello and piano in his honor. The piece has been performed in Dallas and Ft. Worth, and I would like to share a recording with you if you think it would be ok if I mailed it to you? I know that no music or poem or painting can bring your loved one back, but this composition is one small attempt to honor his memory.
Sincerely,
Mary Alice Rich

My son met Lance @ the MCRD Base in San Diego and he considered Lance one of his best friends. He was always talking about Lance. My son and his wife had a baby while they were in San Diego and Lance was always wanting to babysit Noah. Kris said that when they were together,Lance made sure that HE got to push the stroller. This is just one of the many stories Kris and Cheryl told me about Lance. I felt like I already knew him. They both deployed about the same time. Kris was devistated about Lance. He and Cheryl still have pictures of Lance on their computer. I can't tell you how very sorry I am about your-our Hero....but he will NEVER be forgotten........ Brenda Clampitt

To the family of Lance Cpl. Graham,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God bless you.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Lance, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Prayer for the living and those that have passed………

Oh Great Usen he walks with you now
Oh Great Spirit be with us always and give us strength
Let our prayers be heard, felt and shared
Heal our pain but do not let us forget
The smiles, the laughter, the good times
Let my Family be our strength and
Let those who have gone before us hear our prayers
That they remain by our side always and
That we remember them always
When we feel the wind and see the sun rise
And on the moonlit night when you hear
The silence or the Night Eagle (Owl) calling
And there among the stars and beyond
Let us one day see them and you Great Spirit
Let our faith in you be our strength
Oh Great Spirit be with us always

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I am sorry for your loss. I met your son in Las Vegas while the boys were on leave before deployment for Iraq. I cannot begin to tell you how much respect my son felt for your son. My heart, although in pieces, feels for you. My son, Sgt. Michael Marzano left this earth with your son that awful night. May they guard the streets of heaven and help us heal, if at all possible.

I have a picture of our boys names engraved on a wall in Pennsylvania as a memorial. When you are ready, call me and I will send you a copy. We can be proud, all give some, but our boys gave all.
