I first met the Beaver at St.Bart's in Bethesda. Then I'd hang out and surf in North Shores with Steve and Stewart and the Vasco brothers. One time Steve and I were surfing and we swore a shark swam underneath our boards!! We hightailed it back to his parents house and told his father: After the shark swam under our boards I felt a warm current,Mr.Shannon replied:If that happened to me,i'd have been in my own warm current!! That was in the days of Gordan&Smith surfboards.I still own my G&S surfboard and everytime I looked at it,I remember those days and Steve!! I still have the 3 dings Stewart did when I loaned it to him.

I have fond memories of the Shannon family. You all touched my soul!! Thanks for your kindness in my early teenage years!!

GOD BLESS STEVE SHANNON,

Sincerely,

James Shortley,jr [ Potomac,md]

Dear Shannon Family,

Beaver was an essential element of life in River Falls in the early 1970s. As 7 to 10 year old, he was fearless and bold. He would try just about any sport ranging from flipping on our backyard trampoline, leaping 10 feet off a swing in full arch, trying new maneuvers off the 3 meter board at the pool, and racing BMX bikes with my brother Dave (after graduating from “Big Wheels” races). Beaver would rarely back down if he squared off with older kids, no matter the age or size difference. His gusto for life was infectious. While I have not seen Beaver in years, I have very fond memories of him and the rest of the Shannon clan. I am sorry that I was not able to attend the memorial service today in Washington, but I know my brother Dave and mother Renee was there to represent the entire Carlson clan who loved Beaver and share in your loss.

As neighbors of the Shannon's in River Falls, I remember Beaver(Steve), very well, I spent many days diving with him at the pool, and though I was much older than he, he would try anything I did, and even when he landed hard he always got back up for another try.
He had a zest for life and a courage that most people do not get. He was like the younger brother always trying to beat the older kids no matter the task at hand. And often times out of sheer force of personality and guts he would. A special kid, and I am sure a special man. He will be missed.

It is with great sorrow that I learned the news about Steven. I am so very sorry for your enormous loss. Steven (Beaver as I fondly remember him) was an extraordinary person. So full of life and spirit. He brought so much to your family and to others. He was a joy to be around. It is hard to comprehend this tragic loss and even more difficult to accept it. I will always have fond memories of Steven and will remain inspired by his example to live life to the fullest, as he did.

To the Shannon family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I remembered playing a one on one soccer with Steve a few years ago, it was one of the memorable moment for me. Steve kept laughing through out the duel. I remembered him saying to me "experience versus youth". He taught me how to recognize and appreciate it. You never forget Steve's smiling face. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

I am heartbroken for you and your family. There is not a mother/grandmother who is more dedicated to her loving family than you. I so enjoy hearing you talk about your family as you actually glow with all the love you have for them. I hope during this most difficult time you are able to celebrate all the beautiful memories you have of your beloved son as I know there are many. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to know him but by all accounts, he sounds a lot like you which makes him an incredibly special person loved by everyone who knew him.

I met Steve through Dolly and Andrew. Since that meeting years ago Steve, Heather, Casey and Abigail have been family friends. I and my family are so lucky to have known Steve. He was full of life and there was not a moment that he did not express and show how much he enjoyed people, his friends, and his family.

I am a motorcycle rider too and the day Steve got his new motorcycle he drove over to my house to show it off. In typical full of life energy, Steve said, "you have to see this thing, you are the only person in the neighborhood who will appreciate it."

I am crushed by this, as I know everyone else who knows Steve is.

My sympathies and condolences to the Shannon family.
