James Fowden Obituary

James A. Fowden Jr. NORFOLK - On July 16, 2009, James A. Fowden Jr. of Fleming Island, Fla. passed away at the age of 86 after a long illness. He was born in Richmond, Va., Feb. 10, 1923, the only child of James A. Fowden and Cornelia C. Fowden. He graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk and attended the Norfolk Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and earned the wings of a Naval aviator. As a Naval Reservist, he again served his country after being recalled for the Korean War. He remained in the Naval Reserve, serving more than 20 years and retired as a lieutenant commander. His distinguished career with New York Life Insurance Co., was highlighted by his being named general manager for several offices, ending his career as general manager of the Jacksonville, Fla., office. His lifelong interests were boating, traveling and his affiliation with Naval aviation. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Copper Fowden; son, James A. Fowden III and wife Patricia; daughter, Joanne F. Reckis and husband Ralph; son, Clayton T. Fowden and daughter Cooke F. Macdonald; grandchildren, Dustin Fowden and wife Debi, Chris Fowden and wife Michelle, Jamie Reckis Bailey and husband Matt, Kimberly Fowden Hanson and husband Devin, W. Clay Fowden and wife Celeste, Robert Reckis and wife Lisa, Jason Fowden; and seven great-grandchildren. Inurnment will be in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m.
