Jean Haynes Obituary

Jean Haynes PORTSMOUTH - Jean Haynes, 85, of Churchland, died Nov. 3, 2010. She was born April 21, 1925 in New York City, the daughter of Emma B. Abraham and John Abraham. She was the widow of M. Victor Haynes, who died last year. After beginning her career as an illustrator and pattern-cutter at Vogue, she moved to Virginia to marry and raise her family and pursued a career in teaching; she retired from the Williams School in Norfolk after teaching there for 30 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk and Saint Andrew Lutheran Church in Churchland. She is survived by her two daughters, Buttons Boggs (Mary-Anne) and Marci Moorehead; her son, Victor (Skip) Haynes; six grandchildren, Nigel Haynes, Tobias Gonzales, Belle Boggs, Vincent Sky Boggs, John Dale Moorehead, and Travis Moorehead; one great-grandchild, Kingston Haynes; and many other relatives and friends. Jean, known as "Jeannie" to her grandchildren, was an artist who inspired her children and grandchildren in artistic fields including painting, writing, woodworking, music, teaching, and surfing. She was a wonderful cook and was known never to sit down. A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at Saint Andrew Lutheran Church. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Portsmouth Area Resources Council (PARC). Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
