In memory of my Uncle Doug,
I will always rember the beautiful memories that he gave me as a young girl, teenager and then as a woman. I will never forget his kindness during my scoliosis surgery toward me and my parents. Our whole family spent many hours together for many years. He was always delighted to spend holidays at our house or to recieve one of my mom's many homemade goodies. He and my dad often swapped stories about the olden days and our ancestries. I often marveled at the little glass vial that contained black ash. He said it was from Hawaii, where he was stationed before Pearl Harbor happened. The beaches were black because of the volcanic ash. They actually imported the sand to make the beaches white. I remember all the paintings, what a gifted artist he was. The player piano that he would play for me without ever a question. I tried and it took legs of steel, it was very hard work. I pray that he will be at peace now with his beloved Virginia. I pray for Richard and James that their hearts will gradually heal. I also pray for my Dad as he feels the pain as the last remaining sibling that God will show him Grace and understanding. I also pray for the grand and greatgrandchildren that they will have memories of a loving man.

Dear Great-Grandpa,
I'll miss you. It was fun going over to visit you and I was thrilled to know I made your Christmas Day a little bit brighter. I enjoyed hearing about the Navy and Shirley Temple. I will never forget you!
Love,
your great-grandaughter

Mr. Leonard was our next door neighbor for 5 years when we lived on Elm St. We enjoyed our visits and he would share great stories with us and our kids about his many interests: art, engineering, travelling, family, and his military adventures. We mourn with the Leonard Family during this time.

The J. Richard and Eleanor VanGorder family sends the Doug and Virginia Leonard family our sincere and deep sympathies on the passing of Mr. "Doug" Leonard, our Elm Street, Newark Valley neighbor for nearly 50 years. So many good memories from such a humble and polite gentleman that we will always remember. Our mother Eleanor looked forward to seeing Doug on her visit to the area this June. Again our condolences to the Leonard family on your loss.
