Edward Natt Obituary

Published by Roanoke Times from Dec. 31, 2009 to Jan. 1, 2010.
Absent from the body, present with the Lord. Edward Allen Natt, 64, lifelong Roanoker, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Natt, and sister-in-law, Lisa Elmore Cox. He is survived by his devoted wife of twenty-five years, Claire Elmore Natt, and sons, Robert D. Natt and wife Angela and J. Allen Natt. Also surviving are sister Barbara N. Wise and husband Michael, brother Richard P. Natt, parents-in-law, Roger and Leah Elmore, brother-in-law Richard K. Cox, nieces Terry Bennett and Lindsey Elmore Pearson and husband Adam, and great niece and nephew, Brittany and John Bennett.
After attending Roanoke City Schools, Ed graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration from UNC at Chapel Hill in 1967. Upon receipt of his law degree from T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, he served as Roanoke City Assistant Attorney, then as Roanoke's first County Attorney. In 1977 he was a founding member of the law firm Osterhoudt, Ferguson, Natt, Aheron and Agee, now Osterhoudt, Prillaman, Natt, Helscher, Yost, Maxwell & Ferguson, PLC. He served in the Army Reserves from 1970 - 1976.
Recognized as one of the best land use attorneys in Southwest Virginia, he also served as a Substitute Judge in Virginia for over twenty-five years. Known for his integrity, wise counsel, and dedication, he was loved by all who had the pleasure of working with him. He won many cases in the Virginia Supreme Court, his latest as recently as last September.
A man of generosity and irreproachable character, Ed loved helping others, especially young people, and was thrilled to open his home to high school and college students throughout the years. In 1993, he was awarded Father of the Year for Family Life by CMMA. Through Roanoke County Parks and Recreation, he loved coaching boys basketball for over thirty years. Always active in civic and community affairs, he served on the Board of Governors for Hidden Valley Country Club and as President of Cave Spring Elementary School PTA, ARC (now Goodwill Industries), and Youth Haven. An avid sports enthusiast, watching UNC basketball and golfing with friends were among his favorite pastimes.
With genuine faith, he served as a deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of Christ the King Presbyterian Church. He was an ardent supporter of Young Life and was among the visionaries instrumental in bringing a new YL Camp to Rockbridge, Va. Always encouraging and optimistic, Ed will be sorely missed by many in the Roanoke Valley, on Bald Head Island, and in Naples, Florida. He will be remembered as hard-working, fun-loving, and a friend to all. His faith and courage through his illness inspired many others. As all who knew him would attest, Ed truly valued his faith, family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Young Life, PO Box 20464, Roanoke, VA 24018 or Christ the King, 3959 Electric Rd, Suite 190, Roanoke, VA 24018.
Friends may call at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 6011 Merriman Road, SW, Roanoke, from noon until 2 p.m. and from 4 until 6 p.m. on Friday, January 1, 2010. A graveside service will be held in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2010. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Church of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Ed Dunnington will officiate. Please join the family for a reception after the service.

I did not know him well but always heard such wonderful things. My condolences to you, including my special friend, Barbara, in your loss of this special man.

Dear Natt family,
You have my deepest sympathies for your loss. I first meet Ed as he coached youth basketball. After years of frequently being on opposite sides of zoning cases, Ed was always polite and generous. From that we began sharing information on zoning cases. I will miss Ed as a professional and as a friend.

Dear Natt family,
Barbara had kept me posted on Ed's condition and I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing while I was out of the country. Although it has been some time, I do remember serving on the Cave Spring Elementary Board with both Ed and Claire as co-presidents of the PTA so long ago.
A finer couple who always gave of their time generously and with incredible smiles, could not have been found. We wish you strength and the confidence that Ed knew he was loved by many, and certainly by his wonderful family.

Ed and Claire's family was amongst the first we meet when we moved to Roanoke in 1995. Much time has passed since then but the warmth of their welcome lingers. The timing always stinks for those left behind, but is perfect in God's plan. The Natt family has blessed many in the Roanoke Valley and we are humbled to have been among them.

Dear Natt family,
You have my deepest sympathies for your loss. Even though I was just a neighbor long, long ago and only knew Ed when I was very little, my memories of him and your family are fond. May peace be with you all.

Dear Claire and Family,

I am saddened to hear of Ed’s passing. If anyone wanted a great example of a husband, father, friend, gentleman or leader, one would only have to look at Ed. There are very few people who leave everlasting footprints here on earth and Ed is one of those people.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have known Ed ever since I worked in Roanoke beginning around 1973. I shared offices with another J&D court psychologist next to Ed's office when we were housed over and next to the Salem Movie Theater when he worked as the county attorney for Roanoke County. He made us feel very welcome and availed us the amenities of his office. Later, when I went into business with several of my colleagues, he became our corporate attorney, provided wonderful legal services, and always kept us clear of any problems with the state. He did love golf, but I have great memories of him on the tennis court where he demonstrated great competitiveness, without compromising his is gentlemanly nature and unfailing sportsmanship. He was a good friend whenever needed. I hate to see him go so early in his life when he had been so fit and loved life so much. He will be missed by all who knew him.

We lived right around the corner in Belle Meade on Sunnyside when my four (Cornett kids were growing up). Ed worked with our youngest son Brandon on a legal issue and when Brandon applied to VMI Ed wrote a wonderful recommendation letter for him. Brandon admired him so much, graduated from VMI became a Navy Lt. I will certainly forward this on to him in Austin, Texas. I am sorry this has happened in your life.

I had the opportunity of meeting Mr. Natt and some of his family this past November, spending about an hour with them. It was apparent that this was an exceptional man and extraordinary family, although I knew very little about them. Mr. Natt, in a moment alone with me, told me that he did not want to die but was prepared, that he had a wonderful life and his faith was sustaining him. After learning more about him in the articles in the Roanoke Times, I know how truly exceptional a person he was. His spirit and inspiration remains with his family and all those who knew him.
