OTIS, ARTHUR BROOKS



Arthur Brooks Otis, Professor Emeritus University of Florida, died April 4, 2008, at the age of 94.



He was one of the original facility at the UF College of Medicine (1956), and the first chairman of the Dept. of Physiology. Dr. Otis was born in 1913 in Grafton, Maine. He attended a one-room schoolhouse until 9th grade, when he went to Bridgton (Maine) High School. He graduated from the University of Maine, Springfield College and Brown University. He married Eileen Macomber in 1941. During World War Two, both he and Mrs. Otis were civilian scientists. He did high altitude research with the Army Air Force and she did biological research for the Manhattan Project. Dr. Otis was a Fulbright Research Scholar in 1950-51 and 1964-85.



The Otis family moved to Gainesville in 1956. He and Mrs. Otis were avid golfers and both worked as volunteers with the Friends of the Library.



He is survived by his son, Chandler Otis, and by his friend and caretaker, Rosetta Franklin, and friends Veronica Franklin and Joe Calhoun.



Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS DOWNTOWN FUNERAL HOME, 404 North Main Street.
