Richard Brauer Obituary

BRAUER , Richard Easton
Richard Easton Brauer was born on November 7, 1927, in Torrance, California, to Easton and Eva Brauer, and passed away on January 13, 2007, in Orange, California. Richard attended Beverly Hills High School, La Sierra University, and Kansas City School of Osteopathic Medicine. He married Beverly Jane Canine, of Kansas City, Missouri, in 1955, and located to the San Ana/Tustin area in 1959. He practiced family medicine in Santa Ana and Irvine from 1959 until his retirement in 1994.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years; his four children: Kyle (Rod) Boone, Brad (Sasha) Brauer, Laurel (Danny Real) Brauer, and Barrett Brauer; and five grandchildren: Galen Boone, Fletcher Boone, Grayson Real, Morlan Brauer, and Katie Brauer. His children fondly remember his beautiful voice and love of the great Italian tenors; his dry sense of humor tempered with empathy and compassion; his favorite exclamations (“Bah! Humbug!”, “For crying out loud!,” and “I'm going out in the backyard to eat worms!”); his ability to derive pure pleasure from the most mediocre food (McDonald's coffee, store bought rice pudding, and burnt toast being of particular note) combined with a complete inability to cook; his passionate pursuit of any number of idiosyncratic hobbies, including his “putting green” lawn or his composting ("Compost: because a rind is a terrible thing to waste" was a favorite t-shirt); and above all, his devotion to his family, his many patients whose lives he touched, and the Orange Coast/Irvine Seventh-day Adventist Church. It was these qualities that endeared him to so many and made him such a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, musician, physician, and friend. We will all miss you, Richard.
A celebration of his life will be held on February 3 at 2pm at Orange Coast Seventh-day Adventist Church (Good Shepherd Lutheran Church), 4800 Irvine Center Drive, Irvine. Contributions in his memory can be made to the National Stuttering Association, 119 W. 40th Street, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10018 ([email protected]).

My sympathy to the Brauer family. I will always remember Richard for his kindness to others especially to those of us challenged with a chronic stutter. I served with Richard on the National Stuttering Association Board of Directors. I appreciated the Brauer family opening their home to members of NSA's Orange County Chapter for several years and Richard leading the chapter as their President. Richard helped us make history in planning in his home the first ever demonstration of people who stutter against the public ridicule of stutterers in films like "A Fish Called Wanda." Richard joined us on the picket line. The demonstration made news worldwide on the day before the Oscars. I will miss Richard.

To the Brauer Family,

The thoughts and prayers of my family are with you during this difficult time. I have fond memories of your family while we were growing up, going to Orangewood Academy and of the 20th reunion party, so graciously hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Brauer for the Class of 1981, which was the last time I saw Dr. Brauer. God bless you with peace and may you find solace in your memories.

Dear Beverly and family: I was saddened to read today that Dr. Brauer had passed. As you might remember, he was the first doctor I started transcribing for and the last. When he retired, I retired doing that too, as who could ever be more fun to work for or have as much patience and laugh when I gave him my many excuses as why the report was late:) He used to tell both Susan and me that the three women in his life that made him crazy at times was you, me and Susan and he'd chuckle as he'd spill his favorite office treat (popcorn). He gave me advise and positive assurance when I decided to start my own board and care home for my mom who had dementia. He was a man of intriguity, honesty and a damn good doctor. My entire family, my daughter who accompanied me for 10 yrs while working for him, my son who drove him home once and of course my husband to whom Dr. Brauer would ask the ultimate question to him, "does she ever stop talking" (with his wonderful chuckle) send our prayers. With fond and unforgetable memories, geri
