Selma – Betty Pilkington Evans, age 86, transitioned to her heavenly home on Monday, July 22, 2024. She was born on October 16, 1937 in Johnston County. She was the daughter of the late John and Flora Pilkington. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Rayford Evans; sisters, Arelia Edwards, Phyllis Evans, and Hazel Worley.
Betty Served her family well. In the early years of their marriage, she worked alongside her husband in the tobacco fields as they farmed. They quickly started their family and had three little boys. Years later a girl would come along. As dad transitioned into a painting business, mom began to keep children in their home. Through the years there were many little boys and girls that came through her care and they were taught about Jesus. Mom was a faithful member of Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She helped lead the children's choir and taught children's classes for years. In the last few years, she was physically unable to attend, but she made it a point send in her tithes each month. She knew where her help came from and God always provided for her. Betty loved her family deeply. She had a mother's heart and always wanted to take care of those she loved. She had a competitive nature and it showed in our family gatherings when we played games. Her three grandsons were the twinkle in her eye.
A graveside service will be held in Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery on Thursday July 25, 2024 at 10:00 AM. The family will receive friends after the service at the home place.
She is survived by her sons, Duane Evans of Selma, Michael (Kerry) Evans of Middlesex, Monty Evans of Middlesex; one daughter, Carla Evans Hawley (Steve) of Selma; three grandsons, Jeremy Evans, Zachary Hawley, and Jacob Hawley; sisters, Inez Evans, Marguerite Greene, Kay Creech, and one brother, Mihlon Pilkington; close family friend, Charles Wiggs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to any charity that will benefit the armed forces.
