David Leonard Caruthers, 85, of Harrisonville, MO, passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at his home. Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Harrisonville United Methodist Church in Harrisonville, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Croix Hospice.
David was born October 8, 1937 to Donald and Thelma (Leonard) Caruthers in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He served in the United States Navy for two years. After his service, he attended Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS, where he earned his bachelor's degree. David married the love of his life, Heather Sims, on June 16, 1962 in Olathe, KS, and to this union they had two children, Kristi and Brent. He spent his career working in finance and collections, starting with Phillips 66 in Kansas City, and ending with Memorex-Telex in Tulsa, OK in the accounts receivable department, retiring as the finance and collections manager after 30 years of service.
During the years spent in Claremore, OK, David was a member of the First Methodist Church and enjoyed volunteering and serving with the Stephen Ministry. In his free time, he enjoyed running. Most referred to him as "Coach Dave" as he was a marathon coach and hosted a weekly men's running group on Saturday mornings. His running led him to compete in the New York Marathon twice. Dave and Heather relocated to Harrisonville in 2007 to be closer to family. He was an active member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church. David and Heather were often seen at their grandchildren's sporting events and activities throughout the years.
David is preceded in death by his parents; his sister; and an infant brother. He is survived by his wife, Heather Caruthers, of the home; his son, Brent Caruthers; his daughter, Kristi Caruthers; his three grandchildren: Sean Caruthers, Colin Caruthers, and LeAine Caruthers, all of Harrisonville, MO; his brothers-in-law: RZ (Martha) Sims and Ray Sims; his niece, Shera (Triet) Vu and their son, Keiran Vu, all of Harrisonville, MO; his nephews: Ray, Jr (Trisha) Sims and their children, all of Leawood, KS; Jason (Rhonda) Sims and their children of Conifer, CO.

My first memory of my cousin Dave, was during a Thanksgiving meal at Granna´s house. But still more memorable to me is what Dave shared about Grandpa Leonard when he and Heather came to my home a few years ago to catch up over lunch. I honor his service to his country and devotion to his family.
