Esperanza was very proud of the fact that she was born in what is known as the "Mexican Village" at Brackenridge Park, located just below the Japanese Tea Garden. She never forgot her first home and how she and her family sold their handmade crafts inspired by their Mexcian heritage. She always enjoyed working and making money for her family. She told stories of how she lied about her age just so that she could work. She loved working so much that she held a job up until the age of 85.
Esperanza was a loving and giving person. She always gave whatever she had if anyone asked. She volunteered once a month at her church selling breakfast tacos on Sundays after mass. She would get up early and make homemade papas con huevo and chorizo con huevo for the church breakfast. She loved to sing and dance and we are very glad that we have many videos to look back on to remember her by. Esperanza loved Las Vegas, but she especially loved to hear the sound of the slot machine when it would spin a winning combination. Even if it was a small amount, she was still a winner! She also loved her annual trip to the coast. She loved sitting out on the balcony and feeling the cool breeze on her face.
Esperanza loved her neighbors. Even though some of the neighbors moved away, they always came back for a visit. The ladies in the neighborhood were affectionately known as the "Golden Girls." Esperanza enjoyed hosting them in her home and making lunch for them. In her final days, the children who once played in her yard and in front of her house, came to say goodbye.
We will forever have phrases embedded in our heads like "Let's go window wishing," and "let me put on my lippy stick." We will remember her laughter that was so contagious and always started with a loud yell before the laughter. In her later years she was attending Grace Place Alzheimer's Activity Center. She enjoyed meeting new people and helping those who were not as active as she was. She once said "when I first started coming here I was a worker, but now I think I am one of them and that's OK because I like it."
Esperanza touched so many lives as a sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, Godmother, and friend to so many and she will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank all those who helped care for her, Rickie, Ruth, Romina, Stephanie, but especially someone she loved like a daughter, Irene Gonzalez. We couldn't have done this without all of you! We would also like to thank the Suncrest Hospice Facility for helping us this final year. Your staff helped in every way possible to make Esperanza comfortable.
In the end, Esperanza did it her way. She spent her final week surrounded by family and friends. She was able to say goodbye to her family and give us a blessing before she entered into eternal rest. She will forever be in our hearts. Flowers are beautiful and she loved them, however consider making a donation in her memory to San Martin De Porres Church, Grace Place, Meals on Wheels or
your favorite charity.
