Hazel Starnes Mangum was born December 10, 1935, daughter to the late Lawson Lee and Virgie McCoy Starnes. She passed from this life on November 17, 2023, to join her loving husband, R.B. Mangum who preceded her in death on December 28, 2011, and her precious son, Rodney McGuirt who went to Heaven on December 31, 2019. She was received into the arms of her heavenly father whom she served well.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She led her family by love and example. Mrs. Mangum shared her moral and religious beliefs on a daily basis. Mrs. Mangum loved her church family and was always faithful to go when the church doors were open as long as she was able.
Mrs. Mangum was employed by the Union County Public Library until her retirement. With so much extra love to give, she cared for and nurtured children in her home for the next twelve years. Many of whom still call her Mamaw Hazel.
She leaves behind her God-given children; Debra (late Marion Funderburk) Funderburk of Wesley Chapel, NC; Iris (Lee) Whiteside of Wilmington, NC; one grandson, Dr. H.L. Whiteside III (Trey) of Nashville, TN of whom she was so proud and loved so dearly. Also survived by her are her chosen children, Renee Rodgers of Mineral Springs, NC; Mike and Debbie Easley of Monroe, NC; Tara Purser of Unionville, NC; and Morgan Black of Monroe, NC. One brother, Lonnie Ray (Kay) Starnes of Latta, SC; one sister, Janie (Joe) Helms of Monroe, NC; two sisters-in-law, Shelby Starnes of Wesley Chapel, NC and Lenell Hamilton of Monroe, NC; and many nieces and nephews whom she cared for deeply.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 PM, Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Eddie Price. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM prior to the Celebration of Life Service in the sanctuary. Burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 2518 Lancaster Hwy., Monroe, NC 28112.
