James Edward Kraus

James Edward Kraus, age 96, died Tuesday, January 31, 2023.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, April 27, 1926, the son of Robert J. Kraus, noted church architect, and Marie O. Friess. He had two brothers, Robert M. of Akron, and Richard J. killed in World War II, many nieces and nephews, former students and dear friends among the local clergy. He attended St. Charles Preparatory School and College Seminary, where he later taught, and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and the Angelicum in Rome. He taught theology, English literature, and many other subjects for twenty years.
He was pastor of St. Timothy Church for five years. He was a leader locally and nationally in the ecumenical, liturgical, and catechetical movements after the Second Vatican Council. In 1979 he married Judith Ann Cook. They had two sons: Isaiah John and Justin Peter, and two grandchildren: Lana Marie and Ruby Kim. For twenty years he was the administrator of Brown Memorial Home in Circleville and Jenkins Memorial in Wellston. In retirement he continued his ministry to the sick and elderly, and translated the Scriptures.
Visitation will be at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 6, 2023 in the Mother of Mercy Chapel at St. Charles, 2010 E. Broad St. Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 noon and interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
