Jean Carol Custer, affectionately known as Cubby, graced this world with her presence on November 26, 1941, in Roanoke, Virginia. She peacefully departed on January 3, 2024, in Salem, Virginia, leaving behind many cherished memories.
Jean dedicated her career to compassion, working for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in home health care and private-duty hospice care. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her profession into the many lives she touched. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including her love for fishing, online ordering and shopping, and interior decoration. Jean's heart also held a special place for her feline companions.
She was preceded in death by her father, Calvin Ferguson; mother, Thelma Spradlin; spouse, G.K. Custer, Jr.; children, Alan Lambert, William Lambert, and Lewis Lambert; grandson, Christian Lambert; siblings, Calvin Ferguson, Jasper "Boots" Spradlin, and Lois Keaton; sister-in-law, Lillian Spradlin; daughter-in-law, Kathy Lambert.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Preston Miller (Cookie) of Hardy, Virginia, Donna Scarbro (Richie) of Roanoke, Virginia, Kevin Lambert (Shirley) of Roanoke, Virginia, Scott Lambert, and Karen Dunbar. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry Spradlin; her sister, Linda Wertz; her daughters-in-law, Wanda Lambert of Salem, Virginia, and Rhonda Lambert of Goodview, Virginia; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Special friends, Kathy Turnage, Betty Lambert, Edith Clark, and Birtie Williams, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, will fondly remember her.
A memorial service to celebrate Jean's life will be held on January 10, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home Chapel, preceded by a visitation on January 9th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A visitation hour will also be one hour before the service. Interment will follow the service on January 10, at Sherwood Memorial Park. The service will be officiated by Superintendent George Bond.
