Joan Marie Dickerson Chandler, affectionally known by many as "Joan" was born on January 15, 1934, in Plainfield, New Jersey to the late Clarence and Ella Dickerson. She was educated in the Plainfield School System.
Joan was the third child of Clarence and Ella. She was a dedicated and devoted daughter and an instrumental helpmate in raising all her sisters and brothers.
Joan worked for several years as a domestic engineer for many clients who trusted her. Her clients had a great deal of respect for her and saw great value in her work ethic. Joan also worked at AT&T in Piscataway, New Jersey, for several years as a maintenance worker, she remained at that facility and served her clients for numerous years.
Joan met and then married Orlando J. Chandler, Sr. (Hickey) on June 30, 1956. She was married to her husband Orlando for fifty-three years. They built their marriage on love, trust, hard work, and respect for one another. This union was blessed with three children.
Joan was a member of the "Du Drop Inn Social Club, in Plainfield, New Jersey. She loved to bowl, and was an avid collector of dolls and artwork. She was a gourmet cook and a talented baker. She was well known for her delicious homemade pound and apple cakes.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Orlando J. Chandler, Sr.; granddaughter, Joi A. Baker; three brothers, Ernest, Clarence, Jr., and Lois Dickerson; two sisters, Constance Glenn and Barbara Brookins.
Our beloved matriarch was called to her heavenly home early Thursday morning on the 7th of December 2023 at the age of 89. She leaves to cherish her memory her two loving daughters, Barbara Dickerson, of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Constance Fontaine (Wayne) of St. Augustine, Florida; one son, Orlando J. Chandler, Jr. (Bernetta) of Piscataway, New Jersey; one brother, Earl Dickerson of Sierra Vista, Arizona; eight grandchildren, Wanda Fontaine, Wayne Fountain, Jr., Sharika Phillips, Orlando J. Chandler, III, Morgan Alexander, Derrick Kyle Davis, Kendra M. Scott, and Christopher Chandler; six great-grandchildren; three godchildren, Steven Thompson, Cindy Milbourn, and Sherrill Denny; along with a host of nieces, nephews' cousins, and friends.
