How lucky we all are to have known this amazing man, John Patrick Nolan. He passed away on October 17, 2023, at the age of 81. He was born on June 21, 1942, in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, to his late parents, Margaret and John A. Nolan.
John's life was marked by love and resilience. He was married to Mary Ann Nolan for 15 years until her passing in 1982. Together they raised two wonderful children, Cheryl and Michael. He later found love again, marrying Elaine, and they celebrated 35 years of wedded bliss. This union brought a third child into his life, Karen.
A man of family, John found immeasurable joy in his eight grandchildren: Samuel & Sophia (from his daughter Cheryl and her husband Troy). John P. Nolan II (who we call Jack) Carter, Cora, and Abby (from his son Michael and his wife Emily). Paige & AJ (from his daughter Karen and her husband Auggie). From dressing up as a pirate or superhero, attending dance recitals, soccer and baseball games, John watched his grandchildren grow, sharing in their laughter and milestones. His eldest grandchild is 25, and his youngest is just 7 months old.
John is survived by his devoted wife; Elaine, his children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousins; Patty and her husband Joe, Kathy and her husband Rich.
He had many nicknames throughout his life; JP, Johnny, Daddy-O, Grouch, Pop Pop, Pops and Dad. He loved them all. He made friends in Barry Lakes, NJ where he lived since 1972. His neighbors became some of his closest friends and he enjoyed spending time with them.
John was a man of simple pleasures, and he found fulfillment in the quiet moments of life. Whether he was out hunting in the early morning light, casting his line into the water, savoring a fine cigar, or enjoying Jack Daniels & 7UP, he was enjoying life even when he said he wasn't.
He was a man who appreciated the great outdoors. He spent many summers in Lavallette NJ enjoying the ocean. His love of the water resulted in his love of boats and fishing. He shared this love with those around him, teaching his family the fine art of fishing.
John P. Nolan was more than a husband, father, and grandfather. He was a testament to the enduring strength of love, the power of family bonds, and the simple pleasures that make life extraordinary. How long it seems that we have known him. And yet not near long enough.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 23 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 24 at St. Mary's RC Church in Pompton Lakes. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
