John J. Phelan

John J. Phelan, 87, of Plainfield, passed away on May 5, 2023. He was born on November 23, 1935 in St. Louis, MO to the late Joseph and Betty Phelan. John graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1952. He attended the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1955. John was a member of the Jesuits from 1955 to 1960. In 1986 he won the University of Notre Dame award. He was a teacher in St. Louis most of his life. John was a member of St. Susanna Catholic Church. He was an avid sports fan. John enjoyed watching Notre Dame, Indianapolis Colts and the Indianapolis Pacers. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals most of all. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (Strauss) Phelan whom he married in 1962 until she passed away in 1989. He married Vicki Haywood DeWitt in 2009. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 12:00 pm at St. Susanna Catholic Church (1210 E. Main Street, Plainfield, IN 46168) where friends may visit from 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 pm. Inurnment will be at a later date in West Ridge Park Cemetery. Survivors include his loving wife, Vicki Phelan; daughters, Grace (Sam) Mormino and Barbara Owens; son, Daniel Phelan; sister, Peggy (Gerald) Schaeffer; grandchildren, Mary (Travis) Terhaar, Lillian (Patrick) Healey, Donald Owens and Helen Mormino.
