Obituary of Joseph E. Ebler
Joseph E. Ebler, age 79, a devoted family man, passionate woodworker, and respected educator, passed away on December 10, 2023, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ, leaving behind a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and wisdom. Born to Frank and Agnes Ebler in Newark, New Jersey, Joseph's journey through life was marked by dedication, creativity, and a deep love for his family and community.
Raised in Newark and later residing in South Orange, Joseph laid down his roots in Watchung, New Jersey, where he lived for the past 29 years. His educational journey began at Seton Hall Prep, followed by Seton Hall University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and History. His thirst for knowledge led him back to academia years later, where he attained his Master's degree in Guidance Counseling from Kean University.
Joseph's professional life was as diverse and rich as his character. He began as an English and History teacher at Hillside High School. After earning his Master's, he transitioned to guidance counseling, shaping young minds at Whippany Park High School. However, his true calling was woodworking, a skill he honed with self-taught mastery. Leaving education, he pursued his passion, becoming a self-employed carpenter. He crafted furniture and custom picture frames, leaving a tangible legacy of his talent in many homes.
Joseph's woodworking was more than a profession; it was a means to connect with his loved ones. Each family member cherishes unique pieces he crafted for them, marking milestones in their lives. His daughter fondly remembers a chest he made for her high school graduation. His grandchildren treasure the toy boxes and treasure chests he lovingly created, each piece a testament to his skill and affection.
An active parishioner, Joseph grew up attending Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Vailsburg and later became a member of St. Mary's Stony Hill Church in Watchung. His faith was expressed through his craftsmanship, contributing hand-made pastoral candleholders, crosses, and more to his church community. As a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus, he embodied the values of charity and faith.
Remembered for his dry wit and captivating storytelling, Joseph's tales, often repeated, became a cherished part of family gatherings. He relished the outdoors, embarking on hiking and camping adventures in upstate New York and Maine, always surrounded by his beloved family.
Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Agnes Ebler; his sister, Mary Ann Lonero; and his brother, Frank Ebler, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy M. Ebler; his daughter, Heidi Ebler, and her loving companion, Tom Battillo; his son, David Ebler and his wife Ann; ten grandchildren – Ashley Giordano, Ethan Giordano, Kym Ebler, Emma Ebler, Skylar Ebler, Tim Battillo, Shannon Battillo, Frank Battillo, Matt Battillo, and Alice Battillo; and his siblings, Bernadette Sperduto and Kurt Ebler, along with his wife, Beth. He is also survived by his beloved furry friend, his Jack Russell Terrier, Ginger.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 4 to 8 PM at Higgins Home For Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd, Watchung, NJ 07069. A mass to celebrate Joseph's life will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 11 AM at St. Mary's Stony Hill Church, 225 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. . Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the , 19B Dellwood Ln., Somerset, NJ 08876.
Joseph Ebler's life was a beautiful tapestry of love, dedication, and artistry. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and comfort his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Joe loved the arts and crafts movement and had a special fondness for Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft artisan community. Elbert said, "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man." Joseph Ebler was one extraordinary man.

I remember being so tickled, when I was a recent college graduate, to meet up with Joe when he came out to California for a trade show. It was so nice to see all of his beautiful work, and to learn about the Arts & Crafts movement from him. That has stuck with me.
